what to buy 223 rem or 22-250

Congrats on your new rifle. I've owned several .223's over the years and I've always just liked how they performed. Their just plain fun.

In my opinion it is...

The rainbow trajectory isn't an issue when distances are known but when you only have seconds to take the shot you will miss far more often when shooting a 223...

I'll also take the 22-250...

LOL...first time I ever heard anyone say the .223 Rem has a "rainbow trajectory" :confused: I do quite fine with the .223 for calling predators and have made one shot kills out to 350 yards, no problem. Now if I was driving around the grain fields just taking long range pot shots at fleeting moments of opportunity :rolleyes: then I'd want more speed...perhaps a .22-250 Middlestead would be in order.
 
Damn! Now my 223 is a short range rifle?? When did that happen?? I dunno about that guys. Mine is zeroed at 200m and is accurate all the way out to 400 if its not windy and I find a steady rest. And my 250-3000 Savage is looking to be pretty much the same. Maybe Im just lucky. Then again Im making the ammo too. :)
 
It is unlikely you would make a shot with a .22-250 beyond 300 yards that would miss with a .223. Advantage .223. Most factory .22-250 barrels have a 1:14 twist that will not stabalize the long heavy for caliber bullets that are best suited to long range shooting, while .223s are commonly available with 1:8 twists that will stabalize the longest .224 slugs. Avantage .223. A .223 can be built on a mini bolt action with a longer barrel than a .22-250 bolt action of the same overall length. Advantage .223. There are .223 gas guns, some capable of match accuracy, but no factory gas guns are available in .22-250. Advantage .223.
 
Sorry Camp Cook but from all the reading I have done when someone refers to a "rainbow trajectory" they usually mean it is a short range cal. Then again rainbow trajectory is not a description suited to a 223 anyways. Most that shoot this cal, myself included, consider it to be a fairly flat trajectory which can be improve considerably with hand loading. 223 and 22-250 are little rockets. Much fun to shoot just for the helluvit. Perhaps a poor choice of description??

I just came back home from a short 3 day deer hunt was thinking about 223/22-250 while I was away especially last night while I was watching a Randy Anderson coyote calling video.

If you calling from a stand/set the 223 will get the nod if you are spot and stalk + calling the 22-250 gets the nod from me.

But if you want to hunt with an semi-auto Robinson Arms XCR-L I'll take my 6.8spc spec 2 chamber 1-11" twist barreled rifle as of now with 95gr TTSX I'm good to over 400 yards...
 
The Kurgan. Yes the Hornet is a great little rifle and I enjoy shooting it but I am thinking of coyote hunting this winter and may need a little extra horsepower. I bought a Savage edge in 223 and so far so good. I put a cheap scope on it to try and it looks like a keeper. Once I get a better scope on and my loads worked up it looks like the bush dogs are going to be in trouble if I do my part. Thanks to all for your comments.

Really?? For a guy who claims to be conservative and not exaggerate, 942 yds is a pretty impressive shot. I would love to hear the load/rifle combo used :)

Well, the coyote was pouncing around hunting mice when I ranged him, so he could have gone from 942 to 941 or even 943 between the time I hit him with the Leica and the time I hit him with a MK ;)

I was set up using my Tikka T3 in .25-06 shooting 100gr MK's at 3312fps. I ranged him, judged the mirage and wind, checked the adjustments on Ballistic:FTE using my iPhone, dialed in the adjustments on my Burris FFII Tactical 3-9x40 set on 9x, and then I hit him in the shoulder on the cold-bore shot. That's my longest and proudest cold-bore shot on a small target to date :D

Well. Thanks for the details. I'll have to admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but the fact that you mentioned tactical..... I have no doubts at all that you were able to use a factory skinny barrel rifle, with a 9 powered scope to make a 942 yd shot at something with at best a 6" to 8" kill zone.
