How Much Ammo Do You Keep On Hand?

Dumb question, I know. :D

I took up reloading at the beginning of this year and am at the point of having well developed loads for several rifles. Two are my hunting rifles, a BSA in 6.5x55 and a Ruger M77 in .338 Win Mag. I don't shoot these much outside of hunting now that load development is done. Given that I don't use them much, loading a big pile of ammo seems stupid.

So, what do you guys keep loaded for your less used rifles and why that amount?

Thanks,
Mark

Stock up on components, load and keep on hand as much as you shoot in a year-two. Makes no sense to load 20 years worth of ammo, unless you stash it in several places for SHTF decade or two... :D

I hadn't thought of that. I am almost out of a couple different calibres of bullets after a solid run of development work this last month. I will have to start keeping my eyes open for stuff now that I know what combos the guns like.

hunting guns I have 2 boxes of 50, when 1 box runs out I reload it so max 100 min 50

That seems like a reasonable arrangement to me. I was thinking about similar amounts before I started the thread.

Hundreds for some, thousands for others... Long winter in McMurray, lots of time to spend at the bench

I haven't had a winter to load through yet, since I started loading last January. I guess we will see how big the pile is of loaded ammo next spring...:D

Some good answers here, thanks guys.

I agree with CeeZer,

Every payday I try to buy some supplies untill my storage is full and then I replace as needed. That way there is always powder, primers, and even shotshell wads on hand when I have time to reload. It's good to have stock on hand as the local shops have been out of what I needed in the past so when they have it, I pick it up.

This is also the best time of year for casting so I make some time to do that during the windy fall weekends.

Every time I read a story in the media about someone's legality registered firearm being seized, along with several hundred of rounds of ammo! I cant help but think, why did he let his stock level get so low? Was he/she waiting for that next BIG sale before replenishing. :D

I subscribe to the 'sum lots' theory of most things......

"If some in good, Lots is better"

I usually won't buy a 'new' to me bullet unless I can buy 500. IMHO that is the 'magic' number that makes it worth my time to do up test loads and what not for a rifle I already have a load for.

ie: I bought 500 Hornady .308 165gr SSTs. It took me about 120 rnds to finalize a load so now I have 380 rnds loaded. It will take me about 5 yrs till I need to find a substitute for that load, or buy some more bullets.

Just to give you an idea of the reloaded ammo I have on hand right now;

2.5K 9mm (1750 cast & 750 HP)
3K .45ACP (2K Cast & 1K HP)
1250 .223 Nosler 55gr BT
875 .223 Privi 55gr sp
240 .243 Nosler 95gr BT
160 .270 Nosler 130gr BT
180 308 Hornady 168gr Match
245 30-06 185gr Berger VLD
240 30-06 168 gr Berger VLD
365 30-06 165gr Hornady SST
175 338LM 225gr Hornady SST

As of this moment I have on hand;

3K Small rifle Match primers
1.2K Large Rifle Match Primers
450 Magnum Rifle Match Primers
2.5K Large rifle primers
3.5K Large Pistol Primers
3K Small Pistol Primers

350 .338 bullets
3K misc .308
650 misc. .270
300 misc. .243
1.2K misc. 223
4K .355
500 .358
1K .45

And powder...... I have 'enough'..... :D

And you don't want to know how many rnds of factory ammo i have hidden here or there.... :D

No kidding, most of us would send the MSM idiots into shock with what we have laying around.

Believe me, I am good with lots of ammo, even if my numbers pale in comparison to yours (no wonder your user name with your stock!:D). I was just thinking that I didn't need big numbers for hunting ammo that will go slowly. I hadn't considered carrying lots of stock on those components, though. That is something I will be working on over the next while to rectify. I currently have:

3000+ 9mm
5000+ .22LR
150+ .44Mag
100 30-06 (I'm down some on this, need to catch up)
~1100 8x57 surplus

3200 LR primers
900 LRM primers
1700 LP primers
1000 SP primers

My bullet stock is very weak, less than 1000 of all calibres and types/weights/brands. Now that I have some of the details sorted out, I will be regularly adding to my stock. Powder is not bad, but I need to stock up on a couple of the newer ones I have been working with this fall.
