I'm bored with handguns! BAN THEM! Would this be a good range rifle for shooting paper at 100 yards or less? The price is right and my skill level can only go down at my age!

hell ya, I bought one as an introduction to bolt guns and my only complaint is Remingtons lame attempt at piller bedding. Anyways, if you role your own you can expect some tight groups. Very fun gun to learn with.
peace..

Mechanically they're fine. Barrels are pretty accurate for a production rifle. Stocks are crap, about the first thing you'll want to replace. Keep an eye out in the EE for a good used H.S. Precision take-off, or pick up a new McMillan. Finish is where a lot of corners were cut. Use it and if it bother's you, get it parkerized or duracoated later, once it get's really ratty-looking. Overall, a good value for an entry-level "tactical" rifle.

My buddy has a 700P (HB) in 300wm, parkerized finish.. not very impressed how loose and un-smooth the action is....nice shooter though..its mounted to an accuracy international stock...looks very bad ass

i believe they are similar guns

I have an SPS tactical in .223. Trigger has been worked down to 2#, stock changed out to a bedded HS Precision, topped it with a Sightron 8-32X56. With tailored handloads it does well if I do my part.

17 rounds on a 300 yd. ICFRA F Class target, shot with this rifle, prone off a bipod.

The force is strong with this one, at 100yds you can shoot a squirrel in the testies :)

I had an issue with mine. The reciever dimensions were not quite up to spec, as the back part is slightly under diameter on mine, could not get a scope to line up properly. Went to a 1pc steel base & shims and viola! Now it works, rather well at that. Put in one of Dennis Sorrensen's tuned triggers and off we go.

They are no better or worse than anything else out there. Having said that, I love Remington actions, I have several, and i also like the stock they put on them. If you like it, buy it. Anyone that tells you a Remington 700 is a bad purchase, is... never mind. I'll get the Savage and Stevens cult banging on my door again, and I had such a hard time getting the special bus to come and collect them the last time. :D

I have one in .223. It will shoot well if I shoot very carefully. What I mean is that a little different pressure on the stock from shot to shot will open the groups up considerably. The stock is so flexible and with the barrel bedded with pressure points at the front of the forend it is very unforgiving of changes such as cheek pressure on the comb or your grip. A stiff wood or laid up stock is not like that.

Having said that, maybe my expectations are too high. I was recently looking at a 5 shot group from the last time I shot it. 3 shots were a group of about 3/8" center to center, the other two were about 3/8" away and touching. I'm convinced that the spread was due to changing cheek pressure on the comb. But when I put the caliper on the group it was still under .900" so I guess I don't have too much to gripe about.

I'm thinking of buying a Boyd's thumbhole laminated stock for it, unfinished and I'll open the channel up to fit the barrel.

I have one in 308. After removing and reinstalling the stock, everything came together nicely. As much as people love to bash the Hogue stock, I actually like mine and it shoots quite well.
Barrel machining was a little rough but she has come around with the round count climbing.
Overall I like my SPS-T but at the time I bought it, I was not aware of a lot of other makes and models.

I like mine allot it was cheap and looks cool, and like some mentioned with some money well spent in the EE section and other places you can have a amazing precision rifle.

I had the pleasure of shooting at Base Borden with the ORA, to my surprise I was able to shot a few Vbulls at 500 yards with the stock 20" barrel. The 1000 yard shoot that day was canceled, to bad because I know the rifle has allot more to give.

Here's the link to my build it might give you some good ideas.

My first bolt action rifle was a .308 700SPS Tactical. I added a Harris BR bi-pod, Falcon Menance 4-14x EMD scope, and Badger bolt knob . Loved shooting it even though the range was limited to 100yrds. Ended up trading it for a HG.
I missed the rifle so much that I bought another one but in .223 to share the ammo with my AR. Decided 100yrds with .223 on paper was more than enough. The new rifle also has a Harris BR bi-pod, Bushnell 10x Tactical scope, and a Badger bolt knob. I like this config...light and simple.

Workingspy, I've been following your build & post....very nice! Love the BC stock. May have to get one, one day even though I'm happy with the Hogue.

For my needs this rifle is great. Inexpensive and fun to shoot! Get one;)

Love mine in .308. Was able to get a single (large) hole with Norma Diamond Line 168gr. Can make a 3 shot clover leaf with hand loads at 100 yds on a good day using 46 grs Varget under 168 gr SMK, using 16x super sniper scope. Perhaps I got one built on a good day? Would love to put it in a McMillan stock and see how it does then. One of my best buys.
