So out target shooting today with my Remington 700 ml, never had a single problem with it before. I hand it over to my friend, he lines up, takes the saftey off, BOOM! Anyone ever had this happen? It now consistantly fires when the safety is off. If I leave the saftey off and close the bolt it immediately fires.

Any ideas??

Hi,

I don't owe a Rem 700 ml but it looks like you have dirt, or a broken part (spring) in the safety or the trigger sear lock that does not engage and keep the trigger in shooting state like if the trigger is pulled  , take it appart, clean it toroughly and try it again.

If you can't solve the problem, sending it to the gunsmith might be your next step to fix it.

Good luck

Heres what I did.

Took the stock off to take a closer look, everything looked fine. Tried the saftey with the stock off and it didn't fire. So I guess thats good news, no broken parts. I put the stock back on and it was still working fine. Heres a possibility... I took the stock off yesterday for the first time to give it a real good cleaning and maybe I didn't put it back on properly so when I took the first shot (which was a flyer by the way) the action might have shifted causing pressure on some parts of the trigger. Is this a possibility? Its working now, so I may just take it out again and see if it happens again after the first shot.

If the trigger has been adjusted, there may not be enough contact between the trigger and sear therefore, when the safety is moved to the off position, it fires. When I adjust a Remington trigger on a hunting rifle, I hold the rifle by the barrel, and allow the butt to drop about one foot onto a hard surface, if this does not cause the cocked firing pin to fall all is good. If the action "fires" I increase the amount of sear contact. Remington 700 triggers can normally be safely adjusted resulting in a very nice pull.

The problem is,
The "Drop thing" wont do anything for you, you allready have a problem that needs fixed by a smith.
Here is an Idea, instead of logging on to gunnutz tonight, drive your gun to your local shop, and get it fixed. IM not dogging you, but you obviously dont know enough about triggers to fix it yourself, so quit wasting your hunt, get the gun fixed, and shoot it. I bet the rear action bolt has more to do with whats going on than the trigger.

Oh no..don't worry. I am taking it to the shop tonight right after work. I definatley am going to get it looked at before I shoot it again, just thought maybe some people could give me some ideas first. I don't have much knowledge of this stuff, but you gotta start learning somewhere otherwise I will never have the knowledge.
