I recieved one of these in 8mm from my Uncle's estate. Really lovely rifle. Does anyone here know much about them?

Beautiful rifles. Just make sure of the bore size. 8mm's were originally .318 bore(8mm J) then became .323 bore(8mm S or JS). Pressures can go pretty high shoving a .323 dia. bullet down a .318 bore as all modern ammo in 8x57 is loaded with .323 dia. bullets.

Great advice. My grandfather was a trapper and guide during the 20's-30's. It was a gift from a client. Not fired since. Granddad used a Savage 99. Really slick features like the peep site and trap door floor plate.

This should be a carbine length barrel in 8X56 MS, it also could be a take down as well. It also could have been ordered in a rifle length barrel as well, just great rifles period! Must see pictures to give you more information. order of most desirable:The 1903 then the1924 then 1910 then the 1908 and finnally the 1905, cheers Dale!

Many thanks for the info everyone.
Been trying to post some pics and will keep trying. Have'nt got it to work yet.
Will keep trying

8X56 MS is not 8X57 Mauser.

Dudley you have a very rare factory flip up wrist peep! The trigger is the single wich is liked less by us who hunt with MS's. The stock is very worn and needs a complete refinish as well as recheckering, bluing is faded but still not bad. I see it has a rifle length barrel instead of a carbine wich is less desirable, looks to have original sights wich is a huge plus as they are hard to find here in canada! The bores on these MS's are reverse tapered and give outstanding accurracy years later, I would keep it and hunt evry chance you can with it! These are the smoothest guns ever made! If you want you can replace the single trigger with a double no alteration to the gun as long as you can find a good used double set rigger group. cheers dale in T-Bay

Many thanks. I don't think I would hunt with it but plan to take into the local shop to ensure proper caliber. It feels so nice in the hands I'd like to shoot it.

Single trigger? It feels like 2 stage.

2 stage, but only a single trigger. The double set trigger has 2 triggers hanging down. One to "set" the other for a very light trigger pull. Eagleye.

They are great rifles but the ammo is very difficult to find. You will need to reload. I've had two, both carbines, including one that was mint. I really shouldn't have sold it.

To Bad. I don't re-load and can't see doing so in the future. It will still have a spot in the family history section of the safe.

Thanks for everyones help and insight.
