Pros & Cons of a Ported Barrel

What?

to loud for hunting

Too loud for hunting? that doesnt make one bit of sense....I would love to hear your theory on that.

Also it does a lot more than soften recoil and it isnt that much louder not that, that would make any bit of difference. Porting is to release the gasses instead of blowing the gasses through your shot, which can make your patterns inconsistent. However porting for this reason is not usually really needed unless your shooting 3.5" shells with shot. For slugs and larger buck it does nothing except soften recoil slightly.

It makes a lot of sense. Try sitting next to a guy in a Duck blind who's shooting ported barrels. They are not bad at the range when everyone is wearing ear plugs. But in a Duck blind.....
I have shot a lot of ported shotguns and the only one that seemed to make a difference was a Perazzi O/U done by Tom Seitz. This one had much less muzzle jump than any of the others I have used. Didn't seem to have any noticeable affect on recoil though.

The muzzle jump reduction would be minimal, the effect on your buddy's ear would be dramatic. It's supposed to work like muzzle break on a rifle, but it's better in theory than practice.

why are you not using earplugs when duck hunting?

Maybe in my head?

I have a shotgun I took up north for bear defense (thankfully not needed). I had the barrel cut down and ported by a smith, and had a premium recoil pad installed. I expected it would still kick pretty hard with slugs, but in fact it was not bad at all. Not sure if it was the porting, the pad, or just my expectations as I heard slugs were really rough on the shoulder.

As for the noise, I took that as an added benefit, so my warning shot would be that much more impressive.

Ported gun = guide killer. Stupid loud for anyone standing on either side of the barrel. It won't endear you to your friends or guide at all.

If the ports are just on the top of the barrel, it MAY help with muzzle jump, but I didn't notice much difference between the ported/regular recoil.

I'm addicted to those electronic hearing protectors...
They let me hear better than I can hear without them (unwrapping a protein bar while wearing them sounds like I'm tearing the door off of a car!)
And I no longer care if I'm sitting next to a ported/braked gun.

LOL WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT? I use to guide...... I shoot ported all the time as do all my friends.... it is not that much louder..... 12 gauge is already wicked loud....the porting IS NOT THAT LOUD!

I have no idea who told you that but whoever did had no idea what they were talking about.

"...the porting IS NOT THAT LOUD!..." Certainly not with a shotgun. Certainly does reduce the felt fecoil and muzzle jump. Neither of which is terribly important for hunting. you won't notice either when hunting.
