Because v bulletins search function sucks harder than a hoover I can't find anything on these.

Got worked up at a gun shop in nb this weekend and picked one up for $599. Probably at least $100 more than any going price however I said whatever since I haven't bought a gun in a solid year or more.

Whats the skinny on these? Looked neat. How does it compare to the ruger sr22

People in the past have had problems with them, and I'm sure they'll chime in. I however, just got one a few weeks ago and it works great. All most 500 rounds down the pipe and NO problems at all, whent bang 100%.

Lots of guys put VQ parts in them to make them work better but I didn't find the need, so try it with out and go from there. I did however adjust the guide rod screws as they come way to tight and can cause the rifle to jam.

(I searched and found lots of good info, just type in "597 vtr", you'll find everything you need to know)

It's a blast to shoot, lots of fun and a real tack driver too. Have fun!

talked to a guy in a shop today who loved his was using federal champion and said it has worked flawlessly and won't be getting rid of it, wants to try an sr22 now also

I know people with both and the general consensus is Both are awesome. 597 is more accurate & SR22 is more reliable. I believe there are alot more aftermarket parts for the SR22 but I may be wrong. I have not shot the 597 I have only held it in the shop when I bought my SR22. It felt good, looked good I liked it. I put my vortex SPARC (Speed Point Aiming for Rapid Combat) sight on mine and it was bang on at 100 yrds.

my buffer tube was crossthreaded from the factory  that ticked me off a little bit. The standard model was $100 less.

It'll probably end up with a ctr on it anyways.

It it milspec or commercial buffer tube? I assumne commercial.

I have one I love it. Change the the hammer and extrator for the VQ ones and you will be really happy with it. Make sure that the quide rails are adjusted properly and problem or need help just PM me.

I picked up a vtr a few months ago and like it a lot. Been using winchester super x in it now with good results. Had some problems with the bulk rem ammo. Put just over 700 rds through it so far.

:agree: these are must must must do's, its a completely different gun, also i find the federal 525 blue box works best for me, just bought 3 bricks an hour ago at the local CT.

......and 599 ouch!! I hope he used lube !

I bought one, extractor blew on the 3rd round using Fed 525 value packs, dealer gave me another and put approx 300 rounds down range before I sold it. It was the biggest pain to take apart and clean. It was a decent shooter, a bit on the heavy side.

my Vtr likes Winny Xpert HV 36grain 500round packs. As fast as I can pull the trigger then gun fires, no hiccups at all. Probably 1200 rounds down the pipe, actually pretty accurate, I was shooting crab apples off my tree from 50 yards the other day. Thats a lot of fun.

rimfirecentral is your friend

This should help you out a bit;

1. google rimfirecentral
2. Search Remington Forum
3. Look for Model 597
4. Follow instructions on the stickies at the top
5. Shoot and be happy

I own one, had some issues, but works well now that I bought new mags and only load 5 rounds per mag - even for this newbie this is a accurate rifle..:D

Let me put it to you this way, read my sig line below.

Now, I have one, what's that tell you?

I think most of the issues you hear are the BS heresay that is so common thanks to the internet. Guess what? I owned a 710, it was fine. I own a VTR, I'm sure it'll be fine too.

For what it's worth, I belive the bad press came from the early generation 597 rifles. I have experiance with one of these and it really is a piece of crap. It however belongs to a friend of mine and it works pretty well for him. From what I hear, there is nothing wrong with the new models. And to poke a stick in your eye, I used to own a 10/22 that was a pile of garbage. I love to go against the grain.

Do you guys know if these upgrades are available at most gunshops, or is something that has to be ordered and sent to you? If so, who has this stuff?

I believe an outfit by the name of Rimfire Sports & Custom carries Volquhartsen hammers and extractors for the 597. Both together are in the $50 range if memory serves. They ship up here, too! Rimfirecentral has lots of good stuff on the 597 action--maintenance, upgrade, adjustment etc.
