Hi. The M&P I bought off of another CGN'er arrived yesterday. I'm pleased with it and plan to take it out to the range on Thursday to try it out. As I was going over it and field stripping it to familiarize myself with the firearm, I wondered what is the purpose/function of the hinged trigger? Also, although being a shooter for something like forty years I'm pretty much a noob to pistols. I've seen the M&P referred to as a "safe-action" pistol. I'm assuming that this means that since it does not have a mechanical safety, the "safe action" of keeping one's trigger finger out of the trigger guard is the "safety". Is this correct? As well, I have ordered an Apex sear for it. Is there anywhere on the 'net that I can find an exploded view of the gun to help me install it? And finally, I've read where some folks have referred others to the "M&P forum". Link?

The hinged bottom portion of the trigger is part of the safety system. Unless there is pressure on the bottom of the trigger, it cannot move back. The pistol cannot fire unless the trigger is pulled through.
Give the pistol a serious test with the factory sear and then with the Apex sear.
Report on your observations.

that's the trigger safety. basically you need to press the on the lower part if the trigger to disengage the safety for the gun to fire. sort of useless because how would you fire it by pressing the top part if the trigger and if something gets caught on the trigger it will likely follow the trigger curve and depress the safety.

Thanks for the replies re: the trigger and the M&P forum folks. I found an exploded view on Brownell's sight, but it's not real clear. I'll keep looking. Thanks again.

Thanks enefgee, I watched the video and it sure enough looks like a simple task. I have the sear on order thru Dillon. I'll be taking the gun to the range on Thursday to try it as is, and then I'll install the sear when it gets here. The Blade-Tech IDPA holster/mag combo showed up in the mail the other day, and the extra mag (makes three) I ordered from S&W came in today. I'll be ready to go for the IDPA new shooter orientation at my club on the 27th. Thanks guys.

Well I took it to the range today, and I am quite pleased. I put about fifty rounds through it total, at ranges of approx. 10, 15, and definetly 20 yards. I'm very happy with how it functions and with the accuracy as well. I even managed to put a couple into the 10 ring on the bullseye targets I was using, at 20 yards. The apex hard sear came in the mail today. I hope to install it before my next outing and I am looking forward to seeing the difference.

When you go to do the sear swap a word to the wise. Keep the gun with the slide up. There is a little detent and spring that you don't want to dislodge or you rlife will get interesting in a hurray. Other than that the switch is easy to do. Apex makes a whole kit. Guys report it improves the trigger pull even more. I like my gun the way it is with the apex sear. If I had more talent I probably would get the extra parts but right now I don't think I could take advantage of them if I had them.

If you are going to use the gun in IDPA you might want to look at replacing the front sight with a FO in Green or Red. I went with the green on the advice of a good friend and haven't been disappointed. I have red on some of my other guns and that colour works well too.

I believe there is also a mod you can find on the 'net that shows how to disconnect, disable or remove the mag safety. This allows for "slide forward and hammer down" in competition such as IDPA and IPSC without the need to slide a mag into place following the "unload and show clear" step.

Removal of safety devices is not allowed in IDPA. The mag disconnect is considered a safety device therefore cannot be removed if the shooter intends to participate in IDPA.

Look for Hi-Viz. I have their FO on mine at it seems sturdier then some I have tried. Check with Epps or anyone of our dealers above. If you don't find any from local dealers google Hi Viz and order direct.

Well I installed the Apex sear tonight, using the Randy Lee video as a guide. A piece of cake. I am truly impressed with how easy an M&P is to work on. The only hitch I had was when I tried to check to see that the trigger engaged the sear, prior to reassembly. I forgot about the magazine disconnect and sat and scratched my head for a couple of minutes wondering why the trigger extension (I don't know the correct term) wouldn't line up under the edge of the sear. As I sat there staring at it I noticed the disconnect lever and went Duh!, slid in a mag, and voila everything worked like it should. I'll take it to the range tomorrow and give it a try.

I went to the range today, and it's like everyone says. Lighter pull, feels like a crisper break too. I couldn't really judge the trigger reset, as I only had it to the range once before the sear change.
