This the underside of the Bolt carrier on my SA VZ58 Sporter in 5.56. Looks like something is rubbing on the center of the bolt carrier. I just noticed when cleaning it and also the whole bolt carrier is black but there looks to be a wear spot down the center where it is silver.

Edit: Turns out it is factory machined to give clearance for the ejector. Comes from the factory like this.

Looks like it's caused by the ejector rubbing on the carrier. I believe (?) the ejector for the 556 version is modified as well. It may be that it's too high. Likely result is that it'll wear itself down and they'll self fit.

With the hardness of the carriers, I'm surprised that the ejector is cutting into it.. It looks like the carrier is tabbed; it may be that they were not hardened after tabbing and the surface over the striker is being wore by the ejector, which is hardened. May just be that the ejector will cut out a channel and all will be kosher.

... I'd keep an eye on it though. Parts cutting into other parts is not an ideal situation.

Worse case would be that the carrier peens on the rear surface of the ejector in stead of riding through it and it snaps off into the action.

I would assume that the only outcome now is that it'll continue to cut into the carrier until the ejector is even with the groove. You could probably measure how much this will continue to cut. Because of the smaller dimension of the .223 cartridge the ejector is going to need to be longer to catch the rim.. chances are they're all like this. The carrier used is likely a surplus one and never intended to be used with this caliber.

If it was a x39 rifle I would suggest filing the ejector down, but because the added height is likely required for the .223 round.. I wouldn't be doing that.

I think you're going to have to ride it out and see how it pans out. If you have any worries at all about safety... take action. If not, it's probably going to self fit.

Any way we can get a pic of inside your reciever close to the mag well. You will notice a little hook coming up from the reciever. If this extractor is not properly staked than I can see this happening to your carrier.

That looks a little suspect to me, being as it only has 140 rounds through it. One half of me says "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." , but it really is too early to have to say that. It's a new gun. Contact the seller, and make them aware. If they say don't sweat it, shoot 500 rounds through and inspect some more.

Am i correct in assuming that the groove is painted?

Your first 2 pics look like it is bare metal, but the remaining pictures look like it is covered in glossy black paint.

I wouldn't worry about it. Unless no other sporter models have it, then, it was machinists error when they were cleaning up the weld (removed too much material).
If this is the case, it could develop a crack there (again, only if this is an inconsistent groove from other carriers).

I'd say your first priority is to have someone else post the same picture from their rifle, then go from there.

THe groove is not painted and is bare metal. Just the angle and light look like it is painted in the other pics I posted.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but let me know.....
