There are many different manufacturers of choke tubes. Each make of gun usually has it's own unique type, including length, size, and thread pitch. RemChoke for remington, Invector or Invector Plus (both different) for Browning, etc.

The reason for different chokes in each barrel - most target are moving... the longer you wait, the further away it will be. That's why the bottom barrel is usually a more open choke than the top. Ie: Modified on bottom, full on top. Most guys shoot the bottom barrel first to minimize rise on recoil (the recoil is more in-line with the shoulder, causing less rise), and the top barrel second.
 
All different threads.

One reason so many people like double barrels is because they have a choice of choke depending on the presentation. Personally I don't shoot my doubles enough to pick a choke setting, so I always shoot the more open choke first.
 
Oh - and there are no advantages to a fixed choke vs. tubes, in my opinion. Most older guns are fixed (before choke tubes were common, and somewhat cheaper), but most O/U's made in the last 20 years will have tubes.

Yup, and most O/U's with fixed chokes had ythe more open choke on the bottom as well , for the stated reasons.

The right hand barrel on a SXS , BTW, is normally the more open choke, with the idea that the front trigger is fired first when using double triggers.
I 0refer to have the open choke on the left side , using the back trigger first - that is if I have a choice.
if not, no big deal!

Do these screw in type chokes ever get "seized" in place due to carbon and stuff? Do you have to put an anti seize type lube on thier threads? Do you have to torque them into to a certain spec? Do they typically come with a wrench when you buy them?

So I take it I want a Modified and maybe Improved as well?
 
I use German Torque - 'Gudentight'. :) Usually I lube the threads with a little grease, but as long as you clean them regularly, they won't get seized.

Most don't come with choke wrenches, since there are a large number of styles available. The cheapest ones are just flat barstock cut to size, and the pricey ones are precision made, with roller bearings and all kinds of CNC crap.

Some tubes need a specific wrench, but some are multiuse. My browning one also fits my remingtons.

To start, I would say IC and MOD would serve you well. I have full sets for all my guns... Cyl, Skeet, IC, Light Modified, Modified, Improved Modified, Full, Xtra Full. Yes, it's overkill. :) To be honest, I use LM and IM the most.
 
One disadvantage to a gun with tubes is that a tube must be in place or you risk ruining the threads when you shoot.

I ended up buying a new Score O/U for $700 shipping and taxes included and must advise that I am impressed and satisfied with my purchase. You may want to consider this gun too.

Never had a choke seize yet, but if you keep your guns decently clean it shouldn't be an issue. Anti seize can't hurt.

No need to torque, as tight as you can tighten a nut onto a bolt with your fingers is about right.

Your gun will likely come with all the chokes you need.
Typical chokes are: cylinder, improved cylinder, skeet, modified, improved modified, full, extra full.

For field work cylinder/improved cylinder and modified/improved modified should be all you need for upland bird. Trap would likely be improved modified and full. cylinder, modified, full would keep me quite happy. If anything err on the side of a more open choke.

I have another window open and am reading tons of threads on Shotgun world. But theres still some basic questions.

Ive owed alot of guns for a few decades, but they are all Handguns, Black Shotguns, AR15s and other restricted stuff with a few target guns thrown in as well. I only recently got my hunting permit last weekend. So on this other stuff which you guys have been shooting for years, its sort of new for me:D

Thats why all the stupid newbie questions. I appreciate everybody who has responded and thanks for the help.
 
UPS, Shotgun world is a good place to get all the head smarts. What would be better would be to get an invite to a club in your area that welcomes newbies. Introduce yourself. Let them know what your goals are! If you are a nice polite person I am sure you will get all kinds of offers to try some guns. One of the clubs where I shoot have a bunch of volunteers that introduce newbies to the basics. You will learn more by handling guns and burning powder than all the questions on these threads. Have fun!
 
Have you considered a Semi auto A 3" Beretta or Benelli with a 28" barrel can be very versatile. And a top of the line Semi will set you back less than a mediocre O/U.

No no more semi auto guns :p. I have to many of these things. I want a nice traditional O/U with fancy scroll (not to fancy) and some nice wood. I want to go shoot some birds to eat in style (not to much style), (will also bring a bucket of KFC in case I miss :p)

After reading a ton of stuff it seems that if I go new and want something that will last a few years I will have to pay $1500 minimum for something that is problem free.

Franchi Rennaisance Field for about $1700
Beretta Ultralight for about $2200
Browning Citori Lightning $2000 ish

Theres a couple of others. Im not sure yet. I emailed Epps and am waiting for some pics to come in on a few of them.

Once I started reading up about the CZs and Stoegers there seems to be a ton of posts out there about missfires, slamfires, actions breaking and all sorts of other problems.

I dont like the looks of the Cynergy's or the Red Labels. The SKB guns now that the factory is closed seem to be abit of an iffy choice. So many choices.

Any brands I might have missed in this range? $1500-2200?

The problems with the CZ shotguns were cured many years ago, most of the guys talking about this stuff are simply repeating things they heard, not actual owners.
If you go to shotgunworld.com and click on the CZ forum, you will certainly get a different view of them.
Not all of the comments on that forum are positive, but at the same time, all guns brands have the odd one that will have issues.
I have had more reliability from my CZ guns than a Berreta and a few remingtons that I owned.
I would buy another CZ bobwhite in a flash if I were looking for a gun.

If I were to choose it would be Beretta or Browning only because I have owned several made by each and I know them. The Franchi Rennaisance I know nothing about. I do not know if it is the same company, but years back I knew many who bought Franchi trap combos and they were what I would call a POS. If you are willing to wait, there are lots of really good used B guns out there with tons of life left in them.

I don't recall a Franchi trap combo that was a POS. There was however a Frigon that fit that description. It was made by Marocchi.
