Blaze orange in Ontario and backpacks

Here is the regulation wording in Ontario.

"A hunter orange garment and head cover must be worn. The
hunter orange garment must cover a minimum of 2,580 square cm (400 square inches) above the waist and be visible from all sides."

So yes, you will get a ticket if it cover your back completely. So use a small backpack.

For the Blaze orange, quote from regulation again.

"Hunter orange colour standards are generally consistent across North America. Manufacturers can provide information regarding clothing compliance with this standard."

Not true. I argued this one with a C.O...and won :)

It says 400 sq inches must be visible on all sides...but NOT 400 sq inches on EACH side. The 400 sq/in is a TOTAL ACCUMULATION of ALL sides.

Example: If you are wearing a hunter orange coat and your backpack is not OBSCURING so than the mandatory 400 sq/in is still visible in total, then your are legal. In other words, wear enough orange on your upper body so that when wearing your packsack, you still have at least 400 sq/in TOTAL visible (some on all sides...below packsack..ect)

I found a blaze orange backpack. LLbean has one for $49 all in Blaze orange. Its cheaper than a ticket I guess.

Walmart. 19.99$

Blaze orange

Yeah I was just wondering how much the ticket was only out of interest. I have already bought the Blaze stuff.

I think is over $100. I used to hunt with a CO and a few deputies and that was a going rate for any violations. They were a reasonable bunch when it comes to violators. They say there are some a$$hole CO out there.

I think making everything orange teaches the dum@sses that it if it is not orange, it must be OK to shoot at.

I also use an old vest over my pack. Honestly, I'm pretty lazy so I don't do it that very often and just wear the damn pack. If someone is going to shoot at me wearing a blaze orange hat, I'm done for anyway. Just make the first one count cause I will be returning fire :D

A dumb question, I was looking through the regs today and it said theres a pending law change where you have to now put large pieces of orange blaze on duck blinds?

I thought waterfowl could actually see colours like Orange?

I think you slightly mis-read the pending change. Here is the wording.

"A regulation is in development that would require hunters, who hunt from manufactured ground blinds, to add hunter orange material to the outside of these blinds, during
periods that hunter orange clothing is required
"

I don't think I'll be duck or goose hunting in camo during deer or moose season. Too many nut cases shoots at sounds in the bush.

I am just starting out on hunting. Is that many idiots out there shooting at everything and anything?

I ran into a few hunting at the Loring deer yard South of Lake Nippissing. We stopped and talk to one guy and ask how was hunting. He said he took a few sound shots but didn't get anything. So we kind of left that area and went somewhere else.

If you go into an area where there is easy access than the probability is high that you will encounter these a$$holes. After hunting for twenty some years I found most of these a$$holes are lazy hunters and will stay close to or hunt from a road. Best to get deeper into the bush.

Yeah what is this "sounding shot" that I have read about a few places now? Do they just shoot a tree and see if the noise makes anything run from cover sort of thing?

No...they shoot at sounds coming from the bush thinking it is a deer. Shoot first than find out what they shot at. They don't bother visually identifying what made the sound first.

That is why Ontario requires blaze orange. Concentration of hunters are very high in some areas.

thanks for posting that, interesting thread. So is it just Ontario that is Blaze orange with the western provinces not having these regs?

I think thats wrong!
Isn't it 19 "sq
400"sq is way bigger than my torso.
I have a nice Browning blaze backpack and it is in expensive.

Yeah I dont make the rules.. Today when I got my temporary permit I was told that because I already have an Outdoors card with the fishing licence that hasnt expired that because they wont issue the new combined Hunting/Fishing card until the end of the year, that If I go out and have both licences on me at the same time, I can get fined

WTF ? again... WTF ??? :mad:Liberals:mad: That is one of the most F'd thing I've ever heard!

400 sq. inches is like having a piece of blaze that is 10 x 10 inches on each side as well as front and back. or a strip around your body 10 inches wide. Really not as much as a jacket or vest....but safety is the issue....BE VISIBLE

The key to his is when blaze orange is required. It isn't required all the time according to the regs.

http://www.canlii.org/en/on/laws/regu/o-reg-665-98/latest/o-reg-665-98.html

26. (1) The holder of a hunting or trapping licence shall wear a garment in hunter orange and a head cover in hunter orange while hunting wildlife,

(a) during the open seasons for deer or moose, other than the seasons restricted to the use of bows only; and

(b) during the fall open season for bear. O. Reg. 665/98, s. 26 (1).
Blaze orange isn't required by all hunters unless they are hunting during an open gun season for deer, moose and bear.

A bird, varmint or small game hunter doesn't need to wear orange at any other time. I typically wear some but unless there is an open gun season for deer, bear or moose where I'm hunting I might not make the full coverage requirement of 400 square inches.

Is there any advantage to wearing full camo for birds other than turkeys, in the times when its legal to do so?

I bought this at either Wobble Mart or Canada Tire (I don't recall which, but likely Canada Tire) for something like $16. :p Ugly, but serves the purpose.

No, in rifle season Saskatchewan requires high visibility colours (red, yellow, white, blaze orange) above the waist including sleeves and headgear (white not allowed for hats.)

Not for upland shooting. Generally you are moving when upland shooting and birds like other animals respond to movement whether you are wearing camo or not.
