what are your guys thoughts ?? I allready have a beretta 1201FP and am looking for a pump gun for backup on courses or to use as a course gun.

i'll be honest I've never tried the bennelli, but i love my 870. honestly i'm sur ethey are both wonderful guns and you'd be happy with either. buy both!

I'd say the benelli is your best choice of the two, the only thing the 870 has is the chokes, really wish the benelli would have that option.

no way of putting on a sida saddle eather.
bbb

Mesa makes side saddles for both. My vote is Supernova. Why? Mine is a tank that is simple to strip and clean, chrome bore comes clean easily, ergonomics are great, ghost rings are excellent and the stock puts them right at eye level, handles magnum loads with ease (3 1/2" #4B is fun) Plus everyone and there brother doesnt own one. There are plenty of aftermarket parts and places in the states that can sell you everything you need.

My next shotgun is going to be a Benelli Nova or Super Nova....likely a Super Nova

I am really liking the Benelli Platform, and they do have a Sidesaddle for them now, plus, I am sure a Crafty Gunsmith could make any Mesa Side Saddle work.

Benelli's are the new 870's of the shotgun world!

I'm thinking of going with the Benelli Super Nova too. Actually going to take a look at one next week. The only concern I have is finding a tube extension, does anyone know where I can pick one up in Canada or would I have to order it from the US?

Supernova.

Shoots anything, 2 3/4, 3 or 3 1/2.

Very well built and finished.

Oh, and the 14", no mag extension needed, the barrel is the same length as the mag tube. The picture you have is the 18.5" barrel I think.

The only downside I can think of is the lack of 'accessories' (if that is your thing). I am keeping my supernova as it left the factory, maybe a mesa sidesaddle in the future and thats all it needs.

If you want to accessorize then I would suggest a DA grizzly and then go crazy pimping it.

That is good news Simon!

I will be looking for a +5 Mag extension and spring for a Benelli, shortly. If you need someone to test........:D....let me know!

The competitive shotgun market (USPSA, IPSC) in the US, is going to longer barrels, with longer mag tubes.......24" barrels, instead of 18", or 20" seem to be gaining traction, along with longer mag tubes. The 24" barrel doesn't give up too much in maneuverability in tight spaces, and gives the added benefit of longer mag tubes. We shot 20" barrels at the Pan American Championships, in Kentucky with the Mossbergs, and we were definitely the odd men out in the pump gun division for barrel length!

One thing to note: The loading gate (ramp) on the Benelli Nova/SuperNova is HUGE. This makes a big difference if you are planning on doing "Action" shotgun shooting which requires frequent reloading .

I recently attended the action shoot at EESA, and our squad did a side-by-side comparison of the Rem 870, the Moss 590, and a Benelli Nova. The Benelli was easiest to reload, followed by the 870. Mossberg was the hardest because of the spring-loaded ramp that always had to be pushed out of the way.

As for accessories, I have a side saddle and +2 extension on my Nova, both from TacStar.

I think you may have your firearms confused....the 870 is the "most" difficult to do a fast reload on, because of the spring loaded shell lifter; in relative terms!

Well, that is true but I've never had any issues with an 870 when it came to reloading and, like you 7.62m I've run alot of 870's howerver, I've also jammed my thumb between the lifter and the next shell on more times than I care to count on Benelli guns so, it has serious drawbacks too and it frakkin' hurts!

I have a ton or rounds out on 870's for training, serious social work and hunting but I actually prefer the Benelli for hunting birds or shooting skeet. I run a Nova and love it, it's fast, slick and very pointable. I've used mine for grouse, pheasants, geese and, of course, skeet and trap. I love the gun but the whole lifter idea leaves alot to be desired however, training and familairization should negate this.

Now, 7.62 knows his SG's and if he says the Mossberg is faster than the Remington, I'll test it and see if he's right.... and I think he just might be!

For competitions, I'm slowly getting sold on the 590 by guys like 7.62 (who I know has a ton of shotgun experience) and Stormy (who knows his guns!). In fact, I'll be running one next summer for shotgun courses that we teach.

For social work, I'll stick with the 870 for now (mostly because my clients still run the 870) but, if another gun comes along that is faster and doesn't breakdown..well......:D

Tritium brings up some good "moderation" points! I am bringing these points up as purely competitive points, but competition also tends to lead the market, if there is a big enough trend

I currently have 2 870's residing in my safe.....I don't imagine them leaving there any time soon! They are reliable, customizable....and familiar.

Also in the stable is a 590A1....I admittedly have had issues with it, and I know of another that has had an issue with theirs.......it is also just as reliable, and I find easier to reload' I really like the placement of the safety on the Mossbergs, on the tang, but this placement also precludes using a pistol grip stock, which some really like. I could go one way or the other with a pistol grip stock, I don't find it gives more or less control.

Benelli's......admittedly, I haven't done any extensive shooting with one. I have shot a buddies through a round of sporting clays, and shot one with slugs at the range. I haven't heard of the finger jammed in the lifter issue...something I will be looking at. I did note however, how many competitors were using them at an International event, and am going to try one for myself. I have noted that the Benelli's have a mix of Rem and mossy ie. the shell lifter. It goes up and stays out of the way when a shell is loaded into the port.....they have an enormous loading port, in relative terms, thereby expediting reloading.....which is "KEY" in shotgun events. Matches are won and lost by reloading times in shotgun matches!

I would enjoy knocking more ideas around with you Tritium, regarding shotgun techniques!

Ive never had the finger jamming issue, but I dont shoot competitively either so I'm not rushing too much during reloading. Its not just the loading gate thats big, the whole shotgun is big! It dwarfs a mossberg by far. The trigger guard on the supernova is bigger than the nova's, giving more room for gloves. The downside is the safety is a bit of a reach unless youve got some big hands. The rubberized saw style grip is big and fills the hand, as does the large forend. It just feels so much beefier than the traditional 12 ga. offerings. It runs great in the winter with no FTF from light strikes. The hammer spring is quite stiff while the firing pin spring is light. And the big openings make operating it easy with winter gloves on. As for parts, hit up tacticalshotgunner dot com. They can get pretty much all the aftermarket stuff available, have no export limit on firearms parts, cheap shipping and great service. Simon, I'm curious about your extensions. I run a Nordic and it is awesome, will yours be 1 piece or multi piece like the Nordic? The multi piece nordic lets you use the magazine spring retainer right at the end of the extension, then unscrew the endcap without spring pressure on the threads and pop the retainer out for cleaning. Fit and finish are excellent as well. I'm curious to hear everyone elses experiences with this shotgun. Mine are nothing but positive.
