6.5x55

all I ever have used is Century 139 gr stuff I got years ago-and all I know is when I point it at a deer, the deer falls down.Lots of them. They don't seem to picky what you feed them.I just use older Leupold fixed power scopes, and they work just fine.Right now, with the season over I'm toying with the idea of getting a Boyds laminate thumbhole stock, not because I need it,but because they look good and feel better.Spending $69 on my old swede is a pretty cheap upgrade-she's earned it with meat on the table for many years now

not only great guns-but great value-you can generally get a nice one from Tradeex with an ''excellent'' barrel for under $250-and a used Leuopld M-8 4x for about $200,sometimes less. That leaves you enough money for a couple of boxes of shells-beat that.Spend a couple of hours on the stock[generally walnut] and your ''used'' hunting rifle not only looks good but will stand up to anything on the market when it comes to hunting rifles. All I know is-if I do MY job,it will do IT's job.

Can the turn of the century rifles tolerate the higher pressures?

Define higher pressure?

And why would you need to ramp up the pressure when the traditional loads work well?

Some insight...

Not as well as the modern actions, at least not the one I had. 2650 fps is the most I could do without "overt " pressure signs on my old Swede. It shot really well and there really was no need to push it any faster.

I push my Tikka M-65 Harder because it shoots better that way. I get a good 100 fps extra out of it over of the old "96".

We need more pictures so here's my two 6.5x55s, both swedish rifles.

1st is a Husqvarna 1640 with WGRS apeture sight and QD side mount. This is getting an original HVA Timney trigger installed in a few weeks. After that I may put on a Burris SixX 2-12X40 with a #4 reticle in Leupold QR mounts.

2nd is a CG80 with a Schultz & Larsen Barrel, a Schultz & Larsen M/96 two stage adjustable target trigger, and a Soderin diopter sight.

Actually, I am impressed. For a hunting rifle it has as much consistency as a target rifle.

I was thinking about getting a Swedish surplus M-96 in order to take advantage of the cartridge as well as to own something made at the turn of the century. I actually like the look of the straight stock. Hopefully if I go down this road the rifle will be able to utilize modern swedish factory hunting cartridges. This is my only concern.
