New Yote Rifle - .204 or .223?

I think the factory 17 Rem Fireball (Mach IV) is also over 4200fps. Here's a pic of one round through my chrony when I was doing some load development. I still didn't have any pressure signs with this one. For the record the angle in the pic is off and I was shooting into the ditch which is down hill and to the right and there are no farms or buildings within miles (other than the old barn to the right).

I can't remember the specifics on some load data I was looking at online but it was something like 1.5" high at 100 yards (4000fps 20gr V-Max) was 3" or 3.5" low at 300 yards. That's dead Gopher, Crow or Coyote at 300 yards with no hold over.:D (4200fps is 2" low at 300 yards with 1.5" high zero at 100 yards).

I agree that the .204 rocks but i don't believe it's the fastest factory loaded round. I believe the federal premium .220 swift with 40gr Ballistic tip at 4250 fps wins that title (could be wrong haven't looked in a while). Pretty much agree with the rest of what you said.

I stand corrected!:D I was looking at mostly 22-250 stats, never even considered the almighty swift.

Velocity doesn't kill boys. It is bragging rights that is all................

CBY

Velocity is the main ingredient of kinetic energy, which happens to be very important when it comes to bullets.
For us guys that shoot small bullets (back off with the jokes;)) we can achieve the same energy as a larger bullet by increasing the speed.
I like the speed because my wife and son both shoot this rifle, there is a lot less math involved with range estimation, they can smack a 250 yard target without compensation.
No lead on a runner at 150 yards, just point and shoot.:)
I would prefer a 200 grain pill at 4500FPS, but I would probably develop a flinch.
It is the ability to hunt that kills, the guns are just the noisy part.

Its reality SON............

That's a pretty dumb statement.

You going to tell me a 30-06 chucking a 150 gr bullet at 3000 at a deer or whatever game is going to know the diff if it were 500 FPS faster? I think not.

The bottom line is use the RIGHT caliber and bullet for the job. Just don't hope that a light bullet being pumped out faster is going to give the same effect. It is possible and possibly not the most reliable way of doing it.

The animal wont know, but the shooter will. Seeing how this was about varmint calibers we should keep that as a base for the conversation.
In the varmint class of ammo, typically 60gr or less, you can achieve more energy by speeding up the bullet. As the weight of the bullet starts to go down the Ke decreases proportionally, to bring that Ke back up you can accelerate that same small bullet to maintain the Ke needed to get the job done safely and humanely.
Predators rarely stand still, so lead time on a runner is also reduced, making another positive strike for speed, then add the fragmentation of the smaller, faster rounds and you get yet another benefit if you happen to want the hide.
There is a right bullet for every job, and I am fairly certain then when it comes to small/mid size predators that the small/fast bullet provides the most benefit to a varmint hunter.
Can it be done ethically with a 30-30? yep! But don't underestimate a tiny pill at 3000+ FPS to get the job done, speed kills.

well i went and bought a new yote rig. i myself was looking into the 204 or 223 and went with the 223. i bought the new savage edge. i am going out this week to sight it in with some Hornady v max 55gr. will post up results when i get them.

Well done! A very practical choice, I don't think that you will be disappointed.

Chizzy

yeah i had a .243 and it worked great on them. i wanted something different this time around. i think it is going to perform good and give some yotes a dirt nap.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a .223, I've owned several different ones over the years.
