Kel-Tec Distribution

Thanks Gary! The post lady delivered my RFB today. It looks awesome. I can't wait to take it to the range tomorrow. Here are some quick photos.

WTF where did you order yours from. Vault hasn't even shipped the ones to p&d yet. But mysteriously you have one in Calgary today??? Sorry if that sounds kind of bitter just frustrated that I haven't seen mine yet and probably won't see mind till late next week at the earliest.

I ordered mine from WanstallOnline. I was #3 on the list. All I can say is that I am very impressed with their communication and service and how fast Gary and staff got the RFB shipped to me in Calgary. I will be at TSE tomorrow. If you want to try it out send me a PM.

Did you order all those mages at the same time?

I posted a initial review/impression over on Vault's forum. The gist of it is the RFB is a fine firearm but bang for the buck still goes to the AR platform (in my opinion). I had forgotten about adjusting the gas system initially which caused some head scratching for why things weren't working right. The supplied mag just doesn't work right at all...not such a big issue as I have others which worked fine. Other than that once dialed in she ran fine. Actually quite accurate (more so than I thought it would be from a first run). I actually shot out the centre of the target...only time I've done that before was with my custom built AR. Would I recommend one?...absolutely...who doesn't want a 27 inch .308 bullpup?

So how big is the center of your target, and how far did you shoot it out from - what size of group are we talking about? I also assume this was factory ammo, not reloads?

Centre of target is 1". I was shooting from a rest at 50m...ammo is Prvi Partisan 145g .308 and I was using an Aimpoint ML3 red dot. For me that's shooting pretty good...I'm usually only so-so for accuracy.

This is a repeat of what I posted on the Vault Keltec forum:

I just got back from the indoor range and I had lots of issues with getting the supplied magazine working. It would only feed reliably with a single round. I tried inserting 5 rounds, but it was too tight to strip the top round from the magazine. Next, was 4 rounds and it would fire the first round and failed to feed a new round. I adjusted the gas settings according to the manual, but still feeding issues. At this point, I wasn't sure if it is the magazine or something else. The follower is tilted forward more than some other FN magazines I have and there are many drill holes on the magazine from a poor pinning job. I tried some of my other FN magazines and still had feeding and extraction issues when there is more than one round inserted in the magazine. I also noticed that the extractor does seem to hold onto the last fired round sometimes, but not always? Any suggestions on my mag feed issue is appreciated? I used a range of different factory brass ammo and had the same issues.

Several times, I would also need to push on the forward assist to chamber the round fully during loading by releasing the bolt catch. If I tilt the rifle up slightly, it would not chamber a round.

The single rounds that I did managed to fire were pretty accurate at 50 yards. I will do some more comparison after I get this magazine and feeding issue addressed.

Thats pretty good 2 MOA with cheapy ammo. If it is around 1MOA with match ammo then I will be really pleased. Its sad to hear that the mags suck. I never stocked up on any beforehand hoping someone would bring in a ton of good new manufacture mags. I guess I will have to be patient. How was the recoil in comparision to say a M14?

It seems Ngyukon had the same issues that I initially had...something to think about (and I got this from reading off the KTOG forum) is that the gas system needs resetting just about anytime you change ammo type. I did start out with 150g Powershock for about 20 rounds and then moved to the PRVI stuff...I can't emphasize enough about the getting the gas settings correct (I spent alot of time with that one)...and finally, the mag does need changing. My IMI ones work great but the supplied one is as NGYukon's...not so good.

Good to hear about the accuracy reports guys! Good to know its not a slouch! Do you think the feeding issues could be normal break in?

My first AR15 was brand new and wouldn't cycle properly at all. After 300 rounds it wore in and ran like a top

Here is a picture of the supplied magazine.(Top is FN Metric Magazine, Bottom is supplied magazine). It is hard to tell from the photo, but the follower on the supplied mag is tilted and positioned deeper from the magazine lips.

Looking at my mags they seem as yours (actually your supplied mag has more drill holes in it than mine)...I did send an email to Wanstalls (and let Vault know in their forum) about the mag. I received an email back from Wanstalls advising lubing the mag (in the meantime) while they contact Vault about their next step...lubing does help the follower move more freely (I tested with a bunch of snap caps I have for .308) but still won't allow 5 rounds...only 4. A couple other things I've noticed...any riding of the charge handle will definitely make manual "forward assisting" necessary and the last round being held by the extractor...I'm starting to think that may be by design...it gets released if you let the charge handle forward (which also happens when you load a new mag). It's different that's for sure...

It makes sense that it will hold onto the last empty. It needs to throw it forward into the ejection tube, but can't because of the last round hold open feature. If it threw it down the tube, you'd need to manually cycle the action after inserting a new mag.

The FS2000 throws the last empty down the tube, because it doesn't HAVE a last round hold open feature.

I agree that it makes sense now...as with anything it's getting to know the little things about your rifle that makes it so much fun...:D

Fireball's review did not indicate any cycling and feeding issues with his RFB and the supplied mag. I am hoping it is only a problem with a few of the supplied mags. Vault mentioned they are willing to swap the magazine.

In the meantime, I am going to clean and lube the supplied magazine and try again.

I was pre-warned about the stiffness of the mags by Vault and a "breaking in" period may be needed. Also a little lubrication may help too. Obviously if there is still feeding issues with the mag full or any issues for that matter we will swap out the mags for you...you guys being the first in Canada get to be the guinea pigs I guess???

Also extra mags will be right around the corner...I'll post when they land.

Cheers and Happy New Year....

Gary
