Stupid idea or not so bad?

I wasn't really happy with the -25 metal-to-chin weld when shooting this afternoon so I thought I'd give this a try. IIRC it was a member from the Czech Republic who posted a pic of a shorty VZ with what looked like pipe insulation on the folder arm. I wasn't sure how to secure the insulation, as I didn't have any suitably coloured duct tape on hand (black would work well), so I wrapped it with 550 cord. Ignore the loose ends, they've been secured but not trimmed. I could have started the wrap a bit closer to the butt end of the foam.

It gives a slightly higher, less frosty cheek weld.

What do you think?

It's not wrapped that tight so it still has some give in the foam. It's not as good as a fixed stock, but it is better than the plain folder. The extra bulk on the stock doesn't interfere with folding the stock, either.

looks good. Does it feel firm and natural like the wood/beaver barf stock?

Mmmm, firm and natural... Oh yeah, we're still talking about stocks, right? :D

The paracord looks good, be better in black, but that can be corrected down the road. If it wants to stay in place like that I would say it's a keeper.

I do prefer this, though, even if I can't see how it is staying on.

That's the pic I referred to in my first post. There's got to be something wrapped around the foam.

I'm going to replace the para cord with black duct tape. I think it will look like that pic when it's done.

i think this is a very good idea and very practical too. russian solders do the same thing with skeletonized stocks, they use a thick bungee cord, it betters the cheek weld and used as a tourniquet to stop the blood if you get wounded. if i had to go into waste lands and be in live or die situations, this is exactly what i would do.

Good post, I've thought of doing this myself.

I think you would be better off with just the paracrod as I wouldn't like any amount of give in the feel of the stock. But that's just personal opinion.

Also, and this is a consideration for corrosion, what happens when it gets wet? My fear is that the water would just sit under there, possibly for a week or more in some conditions, before it dried out.

I thought about just the cord, but went with the foam to get the higher cheek position for the Aimpoint. The irons are still perfectly usable.

It's closed cell foam so it won't soak up water. I imagine most of any soaked up moisture would be in the cord itself.

I had done this a while ago with two or three wraps of the parachord. It didn't improve cheek weld much. That is why I was wondering how the addition of foam felt. I would really like to transform the folder into something that has a good cheek weld but retain the handiness of it all. A plain parachord wrap doesn't do the trick.
