Anyone Sharpen their SKS's Bayonet? Or just take it off?

"...bayonets are not meant to be sharpened..." They were. Wouldn't sharpen an SKS bayonet though. Take it off or don't. Personal decision thing.
Some say SKS' were designed to be fired with the bayonet extended. Suspect that's an Internet myth though. Unless you're charging across the taiga, they get in the way and usually cause more trouble for your side than the other.
 
I've read the account of one U.S. Marine who stabbed a VC with the bayonet on the end of his rifle in Viet Nam.

He claimed that the bayonet got stuck in the VC's ribcage and he literally had to stand on top of the body (with his boots planted firmly on either side of the bayonet) and pull with all his strength to get the "damn fool thing" to pop out. Apparently, it took some time and effort while leaving him a wide open target to the enemy.

As you may have guessed, he ended up hating bayonets and never used one on an enemy again.

You are right on that, The first man killed in WW2 died from bayonet. Sep 1st 1939 around 1am Polish patrol near German border, in Silesia Poland ambused Germans that crossed over the border. One unlucky Gerry got a bayonet in the belly and died.
This story was published in number of newspapers including Vancouver Sun in 1989 plus still alive in 1939 Polish Veteran was interviewed by Polish and German Media
 
^ You might have heard of the sensationalist news stories about the 'inhumane' Hun bayonets from the Great War that were actually engineer's bayonets with a crosscut saw on the back, for cutting posts for barbed wire entanglements iirc, allegedly they were using them to saw civilians apart etc :rolleyes: . I would imagine that if you ran someone through with one of these you would would need a meat cleaver to chop the bayonet out of the body, or leave it there lolz. :D

Edit: I am not about to let the Huns off the hook though, there was one campaign they carried out in Belgium where they decided to massacre 6000 civilians on account of them being alleged 'fifth columnists'. You will get yours you lousy Huns! :D
 
FWIW, most SKS bayonets are chrome plated. If you sharpen it, it will take off the chrome, start the rest of it flaking, and you will also potentially get rust.

Presumably the commies plated them to prevent "blood rust" - I guess they envisioned the "human wave" actually using their pigstickers in the cold war era.

the only way for that to happen is to TWIST the blade after entry unless you penetrate straight into the bone- look at the way the blade is configured- see how it's SMOOTH on both sides- heck, it's just a KNIFE when you remove the rifle-mounted capabilities- at best, a SPEAR( hello, gatehouse)
 
Several years ago we made a couple blades for a few consumer Norinco SKS to replace the spikes. We used the existing handle and a new removable pin where it attaches to the rifle. It didn't make a lot of sense to carry the weight of a blade that was useless. It took a lot of machining and the blades were actually heavier than original. The blades themselves were pretty good for a utility type knife purpose, but the shape of the blade was not very useful for skinning or hunting. They were ok for a back-up blade but a lot of work to make them. I didn't keep one and was unimpressed with the way they looked on the rifle with a "home-made" appearance. If I was to do it again, I think I could do much better of a job with access to high tech machining equipment and i would make a longer and more attractive handle out of the wood from a stock that has been replaced by synthetic ones.
 
new Canadian issued bayonet comes sharpened and new ones are very sharp. Looked it up myself as i didn't believe it as it is against the Geneva convention to sharpen or have a cutting edge on a bayonet. This is why it is classified as a combat knife, even though it can still mount on a rifle.

Makes sense to me, but my opinion doesn't change history. Its better to have a useful blade if you have to carry it but I suspect the military ideas of the day are that its only useful if it remains attached.
 
It's in case you go Bear hunting and you and all your buddies guns jammed or forgot the ammo, then you get to say this... "Men.. Affix Bayonets!" hahahaha Plus I think it makes it look better with the bayonet, only the bladed ones though. Front weight should reduce some vertical recoil too.

Not only does it come sharp, but also has a sharpening stone built onto the sheath. With modern combat the chances of using a bayonet on a rifle is slim, but the likelihood of using it as a knife is great, so keep it sharp!

this all started with the m9, which was envisioned with a FIELD KNIFE first , and then as a bayonet AFTERWARD- the m9 was a "child" of the BUCKMASTER, possibly the greatest knife to see the light of day in concept, provided you IGNORED the lack of a FULL TANG through the handle- the whole idea was to "get around " carrying 3 knives- bayonet, field knife, and the little folder- which EVERYBODY loses-i carried mine in my mess kit, and it DIAPPEARED from there- inside cover, attached to a belt- i still haven't figured out THAT happened

nothing occult about it- look at the WAY the blade penetrates- if you retract exactly the same way as you went in, you're going to USE THE EXACT SAME CHANNEL as you went in- it's only if you TWIST while inside that you tear into new flesh that you're going to meet resistance
