Varrying degrees of breaking the law or poaching, etc...

I agree. Those February-March kills are not Greywolf's animals. They belong to all of us. Admitting to that puts you on par with poachers who jacklight and shoot from roads. I have never, nor will I ever take any game animal out of season.

honestly , i find all of this funny as hell. Here's my take , don't like it too bad . My land , my animals , don't take more than you need ! I buy all my tags , every year, even tags that I don't hunt , I buy ALL tags available... the $ go for conservation , i do not ever eat "Farmed" meat , period ! I am a sustinance hunter, i could care less about the rack or teeth or skull size . I waste nothing ! IF i were to not fill my tags during the season, and I run out of meat in say , february march , I will go and get more, ...only what I need, and then on my land no where else. Call it poaching , call it what you want *I* am far more ethical, than 90 percent of the hunters out there , i have seen entire carcasses left to rot .... only the head gone ..... i have seen the ROAD HUNTERS ...... cruising the backroads, ....all illegal..... then there's the natives who hunt whatever whenever they want , and the list goes on and on and on ...... to me , the guy that is unethical ,and those that shoot anything and everything, no tags, etc.... that is the poacher.... not anything else. There is so much waste it's ridiculous ,. Where I hunt the Co's have turned a blind eye to the hutterites , they are shooting EVERYTHING that moves, to keep their crops happy ! It's all about $ , nothing more

Yes, some-one has ethics really screwed up.
Perfect example of the me me me generation.

incredible degree of self righteousness here isn't there ? I suggest, you take a good look at the entire MANITOBA law regarding hunting , have any of you done that ? I highly doubt it ! As I said , I am a SUSTINENCE HUNTER, go look it up, in the MB statutes ! IF you can prove it , and only IF .... Then I don't even need a license, on my own land ! Very hard to prove "NEED" but I did, how ? , none of your business, medical privelege! But before you spout, STFU, and READ first , oh , wait , you'd have to live here first to even be interested wouldn't you ? Another pack of CGN's self-righteous at their finest !

Then don't talk like a poacher! There wouldn't be outrage unless you alluded to it.

Edit: Those Feb-March harvests, the breeding does from the fall, are well along preggers and the bucks have shed thier antlers.
There's some great ethics!

Telling us this, then holding out the actual info is like saying "I'm a cop, but I don't have to show you my badge". If you are a legitimate sustenance hunter who may lawfully take game throughout the year then you should have said so from the start.

Well, ....he did! Read his initial post. He also said he bought all his tags, which he is not required to do. I wonder how many others here would buy tags if they didn't have to.....

This jump on the other hunter/gun owner for no reason needs to stop.

Greywolf

I have no issues with sustinence hunters for the most part. If its all getting ate by who harvests it its all good. Some people have no choice but to do this. I know of a few families that would have a very tough go of it without wild meat.I have no issues if these people go out, and sneak a dear.

What I do have issues with.....The fella that looks after the local landfill tells me about all the wasted deer meat, and fish tossed in the dump every spring. Many of these people I know ,and am 80% sure the majority of this game was taken legally.Theses are the first ones to cry wolf (no pun intended) when they have an issue with anyone else.

I am big on don't shoot it if you don't eat it (Ground hogs+ coyotes the exception).
This even goes for bear...Many people I know shoot them only to leave them to rot. It's not all that hard to find someone to take it if you don't want it. I can see if it's shot as a problem bear, but to go out to hunt, and shoot it just to leave it is obserd. Every hunter knows someone who eats it.......Its not so hard to have a couple people lined up to take the meat If you don't want to use it. I know some places don't require a hunter to use the bear meat....That doesn't make it right. Especially when there are people who will eat it. Thats just my opoinion.

I tend to be a black and white kind of fellow and so I have to agree with the guys who state you either are breaking the law or not, period.
The biggest gray area I find is legal hunting light. In thirty years of hunting I know NOBODY who actually looks up the formal sunrise and sunset times etc, or who actually pays real attention to it.

I am also black and white about the regs.
Now you do know somebody who looks up the sunrise/sunset times. I program them daily into my alarm clock on my phone. I passed 3 bucks this year and one of them was huge! They were 10-15 feet away from me 1/2 hour before shooting light in a full moon clear sky on a snow white field!! I could count the tines!! For 25 minutes I sat as still as I have ever sat waiting for legal light. 5 minutes before legal light all three left the area. I was a little pissed and spent time trying to justifying why not taking a shot was the right thing to do. I still believe that, but I never got my buck this year.

I thought you were going to say your alarm went off and scared them away!;)

Well if you're a sustenance hunter that would mean you're Treaty Indian, the same group you were bashing in an earlier post.

The only animal you can hunt as a non-native without a license on your land is upland game birds when they're in season. If you think you can whack a whitetail in March on your land legally, perhaps you should read the regulations.

BTW, the money from license sales does not go to Manitoba Conservation, it goes into General Revenue.

Actually,in some provinces, you can be classed as a sustenance hunter without being native. Some people use medical reasons as an excuse, but since you can purchase elk, deer,or bison from game ranches,I see it as just another excuse to get special treatment.

Medical reasons meaning those allergic to chicken, pork and beef ?

The only way I could see would be those unable to afford meat, but that certainly doesn't apply to the above.

There are very few, if any, Canadians this applies to.

More than you might think. I know of three families for sure.
There are alot of pensioners that are having hard times paying electricity, taxes, and medication, and are barely scraping by. Not everyone has a plush retiremet package. If these people in question hunt to feed themselves, I see nothing wrong with it.In season or not.

By all accounts I am a sustenance hunter (not recognized by the government). I shoot 3 or more deer yearly to feed myself and the girlfriend for the coming year. That said, I abide by the law, buy the extra tags I can when available, and shoot all my deer in season. Roadkills are fair game year round and I've had my share of them to help fill the freezer as well.

Perhaps there are some out there, I've personally never met any.

Many people who would apply to what you consider sustenance hunters have a bad habit of some sort that they could drop to have extra money; smoking, drinking, gambling, etc.

I know that sounds harsh, but it's the truth.

A trader rating of 44 eliminates you from the definition of sustenance hunter in my books. :D

I meant I hunt because I enjoy eating venison and the thrill of hunting. I eat it almost exclusively and have not bought beef other than the odd steak in almost 5 years. I don't hunt because I need to. With what I spend on hunting and guns each year I could probably buy myself a small herd of beef cattle... :D
