DIY, converting a VZ58 fixed stock to a folder.

i just couldnt pass up a sweet deal like marstar is offering , for $650 im getting a FSN-01 and a pistol worth $150 so the rifle is only $500 with 4 mags.

now , i like my restricted VZ58s be fitted with folders and its no secret the standard VZ folder is one of the most uncomfortable one to use. stevo thread had me revisiting the idea on how to make my new FSN-01 more comfy with a folder.

i dont know if my idea will fly, maybe members with woodwork experince will let me know.

heres my idea , the standard red compressed stock is too thick so i would split it in half , removed 7/16" along the center, screw the two even half on either side of the standard folder . ofcos it will require minor filing to fit .

If you cut the buttplate off the folder, can the arm be inserted into the stock? Probably have to drill out a pathway for it. Then you secure it with epoxy or bolts threaded into the arm.

Duct tape and foam is a lot easier but your idea has potential.

I had the same idea but dissmissed it after some contemplation. I was thinking about boring out the stock bolt hole for the square stock to fit through, with the butt cut off the folder. Then a plate on the reciever end for the front of the wood to butt up against, and then probably drill and tap the end of the square stock and use a bolt/washer to secure it. The plate at the front would be difficult, as I would want the beaver barf to butt up with the reciever, then inlet the barf on the right side for the folding mech. kind of like an rpk folder

cant fold the red stock cos its too thick so it needs to be thinned.

duct tape and foam is fine for a black rifle but i wanna keep this red and since i never seen a red stock folder before , i thought this might be good idea , just like the ar180b folder.

It should work.
I had similar plans, except it involved using cherry wood blanks routed to accept the folder arm and then fitted to mate with the buttplate. The two halves would be glued together and glued to the folder arm, then fitted to allow it to fold properly, (hadn;t worked that out fully yet). Wood would be stained to match the rest of the 'wood'.

I only have gotten as far as rough cutting the blanks, and making a new pg for it though. Post the results if you do it.

You will need a band saw and to make 1 of the 2 cut's required.
First to cut off the amount needed to ruduce to allow the folder to work properly on the smaller side of the stock that attaches to the rear of the reciever.
Then another cut down the middle. I did this with a table saw and removed the 1/2 inch from the top of the stock.
I then grabbed 2 screws and bolt's and did the same type of idea as a kydex check riser. This took up the amount needed to properly close the stock. Then to keep it from moving back and forth I simpley cut 2 strip's in the back of the stock just enough to use some belt straps to lock it in place.

I thought it was cool in the begining but in the end I just simpley threw it in the garbage as I prefered a fixed stock over the constant folding in & out of a folder.

so i took the red stock to my local woodshop and they cut it with a table saw, each side is 3/8" thick so combined is 3/4" so 7/16" was removed. see above . thay charged me $10.

i decided to fit the metal folder into the red stock . i removed small pieces of the interior to make room for the folder metal stock. i used all hand tools ( file and hand saw) cos my dremel is busted .

i still have to figure how to attach the two sides to stop it from wobbling but also allows me to remove one side for cleaning .

You know that fabric MOLLE atachment's device's like so;

The 1's from Maxpedition called TacTie Straps worked the best and can be found from seals action gear.
Now cut slot's up and down the rear of the metal butt plate on the would and feed them threw. Or you can simply drill and tap the top part of the stock to hold it on to the folder.

Could you use epoxy in the interior cavity to bed the folder's arm? That would stop the wobble, if you want to be able to remove it all use a release agent on the metal parts, if not you could just epoxy the one half of the stock to the folder and D&T the other half to attach.
 
that looks real good. For attaching it I think you may want to go with a construction grade epoxy like Sika Anchorfix4 or EPOGel. It takes about 7 or so hours to cure but is really strong... I use it in our cell blocks to hold cameras up, so if it's prisoner proof, its pretty good stuff.
 
satain, i dont think the straps will be strong enuff besides i want something that doesnt stand out visually, i want something minimal.

Ike, that sound like a good idea but what do you think about screws that goes right thru the sides and the metal folder arm? 3 screws will be visible tho.
 
I was going to say put some small screws with nuts through the stock bar and paint the screws heads the same factory color. You wouldnt even know it was done out of the factory. You might be able to get some model paint the same or maby a body shop to mix a very small amount of the same color, they are good at matching colors like that.
Other than that, very nice work.
