In reality I have never seen a conservation officer very far from ther pickup truck.
And don't that many really spent a whole lot of time in the Bush.
With the exception of one he was also a trapper and he always carried a Ruger 44 Magnum!
There is more reasons to be armed than just bears.
Last time I had to defend myself from a dog that had killed a deer and whent blood crazy! Luckily I had a rifle in my hands needless to say that dog will not be attacking a more deer or people.

I have spoken to Wild West Guns in Anchorage Alaska.
We talked about a custom 12 inch barrel lever action in 44 Magnum.
They cannot do it because of their gun laws!
But also said they wish they could because it would be the perfect rifle!
If they could they would make them because there would be a strong demand for them!
These guys know about lever action rifles and bears.

You make a good point about new school and old school bears.
New school fur are the people tainted ones.
Hunting for moose up north, the big fur seemed to leave the carcasses alone.
Around here, between the bears and yotes and a few feathers, they make
short work of getting the left overs. Usually find a bit of fur and hide within
a couple of days.

There is also the option of getting one of the Mares leg guns. If the Pumas ever make it here I have entertained the idea of swapping in a full sized stock for my .44 mag bush rifle answer

Yes, its expensive, but there are few simple options for a non-restricted compact gun for wilderness protection.

So you're leaving the site because some people picked on your spelling, but it's everyone else that is a Nancy?

FFS half of these people were trying to help you! This is the Internet, we communicate via text. It's hard to help someone if you can't understand what they are asking. It's also hard to help someone when you offer them helpful suggestions (IE spell check) and instead they call you names and throw a fit. Grow up!

I can't spell to save my life. I use spell check and edit my posts a lot before I'm happy with them. I'm not offended, ashamed or angry at anyone about that. If I want people to help me, I need them to understand what I'm asking, so it's just something I do.

It's really only as big of an issue as you allow it to be.
