Varmint Long Shots...what's your best?

While I agree with your general outrage, the guy did admit he was 10 YEARS OLD at the time. If anything, direct your rage at his father - who should have taught him better AND was with him at the time.

I did a lot of stupid chit when I was a kid, though not in front of my old man. If I had, my arse would STILL be red.
 
I shot the head off a flying magpie with my 22 at 115 yards. The bird was flying low along a gulley and I was up on top a hill; I had a nice safe backstop so I figured 'what the heck' and emptied a mag at him. Lo and behold, he goes tumbling into the dirt with his head shot off.
 
Posting while pushers pushed 22 coyotes out of a bush. My job was the east side. I went 5 for 7 with 52 shots, range was 150 to 600 yards, all running. This was all in under 10 minutes. Benelli R1 got pretty hot. By far the best action I have ever had hunting.

The boys on the other sides did good too. A 3 for 7, a 3 for 5, and 3 were shot in the bush. Sounded like war.

x2...we've all done stupid and/or illegal things in the past. but, i'm sure "the spank" is a saint :rolleyes:


i don't really have any long shots under my belt as i prefer to get close to critters. but, my most memorable varmint shots would be:

-wounded a blackbird with an air pistol and he started flying straight towards me at shoulder height. quickly loaded another pellet and dropped him at 15-20ft.

-first rabbit i shot on my first ever solo hunting trip as a young teen. 7-8ft with the 12 gauge...took its head and neck right off.

- crow at 55-60 yards with a crosman 150 .22 air pistol. loud smack and he dropped like a stone.

Relax?? No!! Youre posting stuff up here that is plainly put......UNSAFE!!! Keep it to yourself if you dont want the criticism! As pudelpointer put it, your father was the one teaching you gun safety at 10, obviously he didnt teach you well and you obviously haven't learned anything if you are willing to brag about those kinds of unsafe practices!! Please stay out of my neck of the woods while you are armed, PLEASE???!!!!
 
Got a Coyote right square between the eyes at 125-150 meters with a 300 Short Action Ultra Mag. I heard 3 sounds...Bang....thwap....HOLY $HIT!!!!. My buddy yelling that was the loudest.

Trust me ch312, I am no saint.......I havent always done everything by the book either but I was taught proper FIREARMS HANDLING and SAFETY at a very young age and I continue to live by that creed. I've NEVER swept anyone with a muzzle and I sure have never pointed a rifle skywards and let fire. Shotguns loaded with birdshot? Yep!! LOTS!! Rifles?? NO WAY!

The one I remember the best was a 140 paces shot on a ground hog using an old cooey model 60 .22lr with iron sights. The hog was standing straight up on his hole. I guesstimated the hold over & pulled the trigger. The hog just tipped over dead, shot through the chest :D. I was lying prone for the shot. Surprised as heck to hit it from that distance with iron sights.

Have did some looking on google and as far as I can see the migratory bird licence did not come into effect in ont till 1963 and was added to in 1969. A small game license allowed hunting of grouse with a 22, not sure about geese.
As far as safety goes, the only people for miles was us. My father trapped and hunted his entire life and I have to say you are being a little bit foolish as you had no idea what the situation was before you started commenting. I'm not bragging about anything, just relating a story
I agree it would not be the thing to do nowdays.

PS, My father redded my behind many times, but not for that. Not sure how dangerous a 22 cal being fired in the air is. I don't think much.

Just curious, what was your holdover with the .22lr @ 271 yrds? I would guess between 3-4 ft. I shot one @ 140 yrds and held over about 15".
 
417 yards on a ground hog. 25-06 using 90 gr winnies cxp1. Wounded a coyote at just over 600 yards witha 22 mag cci accupoints not proud but I chased it till it swam a flooded creek. It was growling at my dog thru the window I walked in 4 shots before I hit her runnin cross the field
 
289 yard coyote on full out run with 3 hounds 50 yards behind closing in fast.

Remington 700 .223. I bet I was aiming 3 feet ahead of that yote and I hit him square in the front shoulder and he rolled three times then the dogs pounced on him but he never felt a thing.
