By trap shooting, do you mean hand or machine thrown clay in a field or the back 40, or do you mean regulation ATA type trap? If you mean ATA type trap, yes it will be challenging. It would be cheaper and you would probably deverlope your shot better with a larger gauge. The 12 and the 20 would be my first and second choice. Yes I know 3mac1 shoots trap with a 28 and a .410, but he is probably a very skilled shooter who developed his skills with a larger gauge? I think he one said that he starts new shooters on skeet with a 12? Don't know that for sure, but he probably shoots smaller gauges just because he can and he has tried everything else and it's fun.
If you are looking for a gun to start clay, I think a 12 would suit you better
