I was wondering if anyone has tried to make any long range shots with a 7.62X39. I wanna try one out to a mile and i looked at a ballistic chart for that caliber and in theory it should work. im not conserned to much about being accurate i just wana be able to hit the target.

Depends what kind of action and OAL you'll have to work with, if you're planning on using a sks or something, its unlikely you'll be able to hit anything that far, but if you've got a good bolt it can be done.

you're not concerned about accuracy, but you want to hit the target?.......makes sense.

A 7.62 x 39 bullet will certainly travel a mile, but you won't be able to hit anything but the ground.
"...looked at a ballistic chart..." You'd best look again. A Remington factory 125, sighted in at 150, drops 102.5" at 500 yards. That's a bit over 34 feet. Velocity at 500 is only 1154 fps. Suspect a 125 will have hit the ground due to no velocity.

Open sited from my CZ858, with the help of my spotter, walk rounds onto hits on a steel ram at 550yds. The open sites are accurate in 100yd incruments and I think they go up to 800yds but it's really hard to see hits without a spotting scope at that distance aside from being accurate with the open sites provided. I've since scoped the rifle and look forward to seeing how far out I can drop rounds accurately.

In preperationg for shooting longer distances with the CZ, I've taken the liberty of pulling about 50rds to weigh the consistency of powder using my AcuLab scale and I'm impressed with how accurate the bulk ammo is.

by not being to accurate I mean im not gunna be concerned if i dont hit dead center of a target

Guess it depends on how big the target is. MIght have to be at least barn size. Maybe Walmart size.

That is with and sks tho. I guess if you had and bolt action and a good barrel with the "proper" sized bullet, then you could maybe hit something maybe elephant sized at a mile. maybe.

The problem with those low BC bullets coupled with low velocity is the bullet will go subsonic [below 1,200fps] probably before 600yds, but I don't have my ballistics calculator out. The bullet will yaw and tumble and will end up anywhere between here and the moon. The luck factor really weighs heavy whether those bullets will plop anywhere near the target @ 1 mile.

It would be fun trying though and would be an interesting article for us to read. How you got a bullseye with an SKS @ 1 mile. ;)

Out to 500m is practical, though you'd choose a different caliber if it was available. Past that is hope and dreams. No offence to red rifles, same for a m1 carbine, etc. the cartridge is designed for less than 300m work.

102.5" is only 8 feet. Little over.

To the op. Sounds like u have a sks or something. Give it a try.

I've done the same thing, but have'nt had the chance to test them yet. Glad to see someone has tried it with success.

Hey, it sounds like it would be fun to try. I don't think anyone would use it in a compitition, but everyone of us would try it over a bet or something. Let us know how you make out.

Played with a Mini -30 that was quite accurate at 200 but at 500 it was really starting to wander and get unpredictable....fun at the gravel pit farther out, but no joy hitting Herman!
