hi guys, need your opinion on these two great hunting cartridges.

main target - mules and whities.

I compared .270 and 6.5x55 ballistics, but 6.5x55 was for older guns and I have newer Tikka, so will load hotter than for older actions.

So, will 6.5x55 loaded for newer rifle be better than .270?

any input is highly appreciated :)

regards
K

the best i could get from my 6.5x55 with the NOT the ideal powder was 2740 out of a 20 inch barrel 140 gr sierra.. personally i like the 6.5x55 cause it annoys people with a 260.. um it depends on your barrrel length.... hmmm flip a coin?? next rifle is a 270 for me just because i have a empty slot on my gun rack.. sadly i think the 270 will win the battle between the two but there is abuslotly no cool factor with a 270 my nickles worth... buy both you will use em

I have both :) Tikkas M695, .270 - in blue and 6.5 is SS ...
.270 is my first hunting rifle, in 6 years I`ve got closeto 20 deer and even one antelope :)

6.5x55 - is a new for me, that is why I have this questin ;)

6.5=dead deer, 270=slightly deader deer, both are in the family of great cartridges. I prefer 6.5 but 270 definately has an advantage when it comes to finding ammo anywhere!

Wow now there's a tough choice: two exellent catridges very similar. the only thing that sets them apart signifigantly in my eyes is one is metric and the other imperial and they are slightly different dimensions. 6.5 is more common in Europe I think and 270 more so in North America

They both esentially are equally lethal. Dead is dead if you do your part.
If you don't reload get the 270.
If you reload 6.5
For me the choice is easy, get the Swede. They offer more than they show on paper, light recoil, exedingly acurate, lots of premium bullet & brass choices, etc...

No..

If you check Sierra and Berger hunting bullets you will find the 6.5 mm has higher ballistic coefficients. So the Swede should be the better long distance performer. Hold velocity better, and drifts less in the wind.

Unless you hand load the 6.5 is quite disappointing ballistically.
That is true. I've owned a .270 and been tempted by the 6.5x55. In the cold light of day however having both doesn't make much sense. In most rifles the 6.5 comes in the same action length as the .270, the ammo is more expensive to buy and what you give up in striking power is not made up by the long range ballistic advantages of the 6.5 bullet. So no 6.5x55 for me. I'll stick with the .270.

Ditto on the .270 for me. I have a 6.5x55 which can take the nice long slender 160 grainers, but just try to find any factory stuff for the swede, other than big town box stores (generally)

Yeah but the developers of the 6.8 SPC found that 6.8 mm was the best balance between ballistic coefficient and terminal ballistics. Better than the 6.5. :)

+1. The 6.5 is just cooler than a boring old .270 that everybody owns.

It is definitely a handloaders cartridge, the commercial ammo is very weak sauce in a modern action.

The last part is true. I've never understood why anyone would let what others own determine what I will own.

From that choice, I pick the .270. There is just no real life or ballistic reason to do otherwise.

I dont' think we can compare the 6.8 spc vs the 6.5x55 swedish mauser.....its just unfair..for the 6.8 that is:D

6.5 better ?......Bullets developped the spc have a pretty low BC value (see Sierra 115 gr. HPBT) compared the heavier 6.5 Target bullets (see Hornady A-max and Sierra HPBT)

115gr. bullets being pushed @ 2650 fps MV......heck I can do with 140 gr. 6.5 bullets on a 100 year old Swedish Mauser.

About 270 vs 6.5x55 ?

It all depends what you're into and if you reload.....you can race the Swede agains the 270 because case capacity wins out eveytime. For most hunters who take game inside 300 yards the 270s shoot flatter .

I have both and I would have a harder time selling the 6.5x55...just seems more enjoyable to shoot . Ive stopped trying to figure out which is better....the real answer is to shoot a 6.5-06 :D
