.280 Myths?

Here's a .280 myth:

"It's better than the .270"..... ;) :p

NAA.

like my 280 favorite rifle for deer have taken several with it,farthest is about 300 yards, all one shot kills, buti admit i am a lover of almost any cartridge with a .284 bullet in it.
havent used it on moose YET!took my first moose last year with my 338wm,but my ole 280 went with us as backup gun,yes my wife shoots a 7/08

Good, but hard to find ammo for, unless you're in a big city. If you reload, not a problem. See if you can buy ammo for it, before you buy it.

Never owned the parent .280 but have an AI in a Cooper. Very impressive performance in the Coopers 26 inch barrel. But then, in a 26 inch barrel, most any 30-06 based cartridge can be pretty impressive. I'm a 7mm guy and never saw any reason to consider owning a .270. There's nothing a .270 is ever going to do that one of the 7mm won't do as well or better. If you're a reloader, the .280 has all kinds of promise, particularly if loaded to .270 pressures, and more options in bullets than the .270.

As I said, I'm a 7mm guy and have owned rifles in 7x57, 7x64 (basically identical to the .280), 7mm Rem and Weatherby mag, and 7mm STW. They're all great. Buy a .280 if you like. As noted above, you're unlikely to find .280 in every ma and pa corner store like you would .270s but half the fun of owning things is not having something out of the ordinary.

By the way, if you really want a pleasant to shoot 7mm that'll hold its own against anything but large bears, buy a 7x57. Of all my 7mms, its my favorite to shoot.

My .280 Remington is approaching 13 years, and the .270 Winchester went. The .338 Winchester has gone. The .30-06 is mainly used as a Truck/Tractor gun. I considered making an AI out of it but never did. Still using the 100 brass from 1998. It may well be my "go to the grave with gun" although a build is in the works in .260 Remington.

If you like a non magnum cal the 280 is one to look at, I have a load that is a little warm(maybe hot) but it can shoot just under & I mean JUST under an inch @ 200 & sizzles a 140 NBT @3150 out of a 24" bbl. 150 's (partitions) come out of the pipe at 2900 & almost as accurate so it's hard to fight that but I don't want to start any thing, though I do think it still is better than the 270.

If you are talking a 280AI,that is a normal load, for the standard 280rem,that is a load that I would not be firing next to my face.
