The more I read the more retarded I feel so I've had it. I need a scope for my Savage 10bas and my budget is 6-700max. Magnification probably 4-16 for a nice clear picture at 500-600m. Longest I can shoot anywhere near me is 700m with mostly 300-400 being the norm. What is the best scope my measly budget will allow? I was thinking about Vortex HS series as I have a 6.5-20 Viper and like it - not here til June, then I thought Sightron but it seems like you would need SIII to match Vipers glass which is more $$, Bushnell is out of the question from everything I've read/heard. I need long eye relief, at least 3.8-4.2". What do I want?

That's tough as a little bit more money puts you into some really nice glass. The 10bas is the .308 is it not? I would take another looks at the Sightrons, the additional vertical adjustment range will let you really stretch the legs of the .308. Remember there is crown land west of the city where you can take you rifle out to 1000 yards +. If you're stuck on the budget I would wait until you can get the Vortex. You already said you like it, why not stick to what you know works?

where is this land I've been dying to go shoot beyond 500m for a year!!!? Yes it is .308. Whats a little bit more money:bangHead:

I don't know of any good places for shooting in the winter. Once the snow is gone though there are quite a few places where you can stretch the legs of your rifles. Up the forestry trunk road there are lots of clear cuts, find one thats safe. If you have a quad then you really have it made.

Based on your other posts you probably will not believe me. But, first I do have to say I agree that you are confused. For your budget you can get a made in Japan Sightron Big Sky (6-24x42 II AO) that is far better than any Philippines made Vortex, and at least equal to or better than any Japanese made Vortex.

Vortex is just a marketing brand name. Look at what you are getting and where it is made.

Where it is made? LOL

You actually think that it makes a difference? Maybe 20 years ago it made a difference. Now the company simply gives the manufacturer its scope specs and the manufacturer makes scopes to match those specs. Phillipines, USA, Japan- it doesn't matter. It's all about the capabilities of the individual factory, and the specs that the marketing brand submits.

Have you actually used a Viper HS?

.

I believe you. I was saving for an SIII but the fact that my washing machine has just died has got me looking at the SIIB 6-24. I have been so impressed with the SIII optics but at least with SIIB I can use my 1 inch tube rings, the objective means I can keep the scope fairly low and 1/8th clicks.

Or I could buy the SIII and wash my clothes in the bathtub like we used to in the old days. 1985 I think it was. :D

Whats a little bit more money:bangHead:

:D I've seen your posts lately. Get control of yourself. :D :D

EDIT: Or sell me your washer cheap.

If you are l;ooking for a good old Japan made Tasco 6-24X40 target or an older Burris, Leopold,Nixons, my friends shop took in on consighment 30 target guns, and all the scopes were seperated for sale, from $150-450, give the boys at www.gmkarms.ca a call at 807-346-4088. cheers Dale Z;)

You have compared a Sightron SII with a Vortex Razor (only Vortex made in Japan) and you think they are equal or the Sightron is better?

You are partly correct, again. Vortex does not manufacture optics, so there you are correct. However, the owner's design and spec all their products at their offices in Middleton Wisconsin, where they also complete all the quality control on their products. They use the very best components possible for the respective products price range, and back it up with an incredible warranty...so who really cares where it is made?

Is Sightron a manufacturer, or just a "marketing brand"? Please enlighten me on this one as I do not know much about this company.

some toyotas are now made in Canada, so what does that mean/ No was the SII is same or better than Razor line up, but I do beleive the Sightrons are a nice scope. I have a Taurus 1911 made in phillipines and its the best shooting pistol I own, people are people as long as the QC is stateside I don't care.

Sightron SllB 6-24X42

target turrets
60 min of elevation
1/8" clicks
3.8-3.9" eye relief
Adjustable Objective
sunshade included
lens covers included
$685-$75 manufacturers rebate=$615

What's the confusion:confused:

If you only want 16X then the 4-16X42 gives you 80" of elevation and 3.8-4.0" of eye relief.

If you have a Vortex 6.5-20 why not get another one? I see they are discontinued, but there has to be some old stock still laying around somewhere.

Vortex eye relief is 3.1", which is too short for this long rifle I got. And that sightron is $649 from Hirsh, that is the direction I am leaning, just wondering if the glass is as good as the Viper

Scope

Have a look at the Falcon Menac series of scopes. From Allan's gun works. I had one not too long ago and sold it with the rifle because buyer wanted the package. They offer enough variations and magnification choices that you should be able to find what you need.
Just a though....

Forgot to give one suggestion, go to a major retailer and look through as many as you can.Your eyes may not be like ours. The one that looks clearest to you and have nice eye relief for you may not be the same for others.Once you find one that you look good through, then chase down other options and price.

Yea thats what I would like but no place has the Sightron/Vortex Viper in same store..

Unfortunately the Vortex brand has become a bit of an internet phenomena, with little substance to back up all the claims. It reminds me of the Mueller APV that all the RFC forum members rave about. At the end of the day a Mueller is a made in China scope and probably worth about the price they pay for it, but it in my opinion is no better than an inexpensive Bushnell.

Vortex has played a bit of a dirty trick. They brought out the Viper and I believe the Diamondback using scopes made in Japan by LOW. Those are good quality scopes from a good manufacturer. However, now they have switched to scopes sourced in the Philippines. Who knows how good those ones are or who is in fact making them.

I believe the Vortex Razor still made by LOW is a very good quality scope, and likely similar in quality to the Sightron III, and Bushnell 6500.

That said the Big Sky is a very good scope and has lots of elevation adjustment (60+ moa), showing that the 30mm tube is just a gimmick and not really necessary.

find me a bad review on their performance or warranty please. I own 3 Vortex products, how many do you have? Or are you just an anti-Vortex spokesperson lol?
