I hope this isn't a foolish question...

Is there a reason why Robinsons in .223 and 7.62xx39, which look 'mean enough' to make the paranoid list, aren't on it yet? Is this just a matter of time?

I'd hate to buy one to deer hunt with and then have it become restricted a year later.

Totall nailed it. Just remember however; the Cabinet has the power to add any firearm it wants to the list without having to go through legislation. Just that if they do it right now they'll be adding more credibility to what gun owners have been saying for years; that many of Canada's gun laws are badly broken and need to be revised.

In addition to tootall's excellent comment :) , it's basically b/c its operating-system guts are not that of the AR-15.....;)

Just as a clarification: the regulations allow the authorities to prohibit a firearms without grandfathering. They do not have the authority to declare a gun restricted or prohibited with grandfathering.

if they can just add any gun to the list of prohibs, does that mean that they can take one off just as easily?

hmm with a possible conservative majority.... maybe my beloved AR could one day become NR as well!

Yes, they could. And majority government is not required, at least in a legal sense.

This is something the gun orgs should be pressuring government to do.

I would love to see the AR15 and 10 restricted only due to barrel length not by name. I think it's complete crap that these are restricted by name. These would be the number one varmint and hunting rifles in Canada.

I agree with Epoxy and would like to see NFA helps us push this as an amendment to the firearms law. ;)

^^^X2^^^

I'd only own 2 center fire rifles if this was the case.

I hope I win the 50 million, burn some money and make some changes!!

Is there any reason that they are restricted besides looking scary? Like they can be converted to full-auto, or that someone used one to shoot a kitten once? I agree, would love to see them restricted by barrel length only as well. I'd be at the gun store at 8am waiting for them to open.

Nope. Just for looking 'scary'. They'd have been prohibited, but the DCRA made a case for them not to be... so they were made restricted.

For that matter why have them restricted at all? All of that bs is just window dressing anyways.

Absolutely if we're just dreaming. Heck, I'd like to win the 50 million lottery. That being said I've had more financial success with the smaller things like property than I have with buying lottery tickets and hoping for the financial windfall.

Is getting the AR reclassified to non restricted a reality? Probably not. But I think it's more likely with a lot of work, the right political climate for long enough and some organization/promoting. A long shot, but not as unrealistic as hoping for every firearm to be non restricted regardless. Or a complete overhaul of the firearms Act. Much like winning the lottery I'd love for the Firearms Act to be rewritten by people who actually are knowledgeable about firearms. Which clearly wasn't the case in C-68 aka the Die Hard laws (Anything on Die Hard or other action movies was prohibited since it was military/scary).

If it was a gun they had ruled to be prohibited, they could unrule it prohibited.

If it was a gun that has been listed as prohibited by legislation (all the 12(x) lists), well then, it would take more legislation to get it off the list.

The more people (including politicians), buying ARs the more pressure on the government to reclassify the AR to non restricted status.
The only reason why booze isn't banned is because a huge part of Canada's population (including the politicians) enjoy drinking it.

:D
