so i've seen a bunch of MFS ammo for sale lately at differente sponsors sites. I realise it's non-relaodable, but i don't reload anyways. so it's berdan primed, non-corrosive and non reloadable.. but is it "good". basically, those that have tried it does it:

A. funtion properly in your rifle. semi, bolt, pump, lever, whatever you have.
b. accurate "enough". I'm looking for about 4inches at 100 yarrds or better so my standards aren't overly high. but if i could make a 1 hole group with it that would be nice too.


I dont' even own a .223 yet but i'm planning on getting an AR soon. either an r-15 or i may wait to see if Neit arms actually gets their canadian made ones out. either way i'd like to start to stock up on ammo now so that after i buy the gun and am broke i can still to shoot it.

Tried 7.62 54R 203 gr. soft points in my SVT 40 functions well good accuracy
7.62 x #39MM both fmj and sp in SKS, acuracy was ok functioned flawlessly...
9MM 115 gr. FMJ in my CZ85, got a box of 50 to try, had 1 stove pipe accuracy was good. Seems to work well, my CZ is not famous for liking light bullets....

Seems to be ok ammo.
 
Down here in the states the only MFS ammo that shows up from time to time is 7.62 x 39 and 9 x 18 Mak. Both are brass case and boxer primed and loaded with FMJ bullets,both are pretty clean shooting and accurate out of several versions of SKS rifle and Makarov pistols. Haven't seen any steel case MFS ammo around.
 
being steel cased they should cycle much faster and harder than brass as it does not expand as much as brass.

out of an AR15 you will notice it throws the brass a LOT further than brass cased ammo.

its mainly plinking ammo. so for a box of 500 for $180 its pretty good for that.
 
MFS steel cased is just Barnaul Silver bear, repackaged and sold to us up here for twice what they pay in the states for it.

A total ripoff in my opinion. I'll keep shooting Czech suprlus, and use prvi or igman brass for hunting and reloading. At least then you know what your paying for.
 
yeah but i'm looking at .223 there is no surplus ammo for that that i've found.... unless i'm crazy? is someone selling crates of 5.56 the same as x39?

100 rounds cycled perfectly in my brand new M-14/M305 Chinese. I can't say exactly how accurate it is, in part because I didn't measure group sizes, but also because the brand new rifle is a bit of a question mark itself, and mainly because I was focused only on obtaining a useable zero for iron sights.

That said, at the end of the day, I fired 5rds at the steel plate 200m, and had three solid hits.
 
I shoot MFS in 7.62x54R.

Loaded hot I'd say makes a hell of a fireball out of my Mosin M44 Carbine.

At distance, it grouped VERY well.

Here's some scrap metal I was shooting. Placed out around 200-220 yards and elevated up a hill by about 12-15 meters.

POI was approx 1/2- 3/4" low of POA, keeping in mind shooting uphill.

2 big hits were from 12ga slugs if you're wondering.

Did you notice this or assume it? I didn't try it in AR yet. When shooting Wolf ammo (cheap steel case) my AR had many short-stroke because the load was light. I had to run it really wet (oil) to compensate. So the case expansion is one factor but the gas port pressure is another.

I tried the MFS 55FMJ and 62SP in my Classic green. At 200m MFS was shooting 12" lower then basic Winchester 55FMJ. So I believe MFS might also be a little weak in an AR. I'll try it with lot of oil and a standard buffer (no H H2 buffer).

At -20C MFS had failure to ignite while other brands were running finely. MFS primers are more picky to cold or light strike.

You're right, the best you'll find on .223 is Federal 55gr FMJ at 400(rarely)/450$/1000.

MFS is a little cheaper than that. You'll loose a little accuracy and a little reliability (in the winter). You loose the reloadable brass. Beside that, there's no downside, no lacquer like other steel case.
For 62gr SP, the $ saving is bigger.

thanks guys just what i was hoping to hear. It's not a brean I'd heard of before so I was curiouse if it was really as good of a deal as it seemed
 
I bought some from SFRC in 7.62X39 SP and my 3 SKS loved it they cycled perfectly 100 rounds a couple of 3 inches at 100 metres and all within 4 inches. If i hunted with my SKS this ammo would be a good choice... JP.

mfs is made by the same company as silver bear and brown bear ammo
 
Well, didnt get out with the .223 today. The freaken' blizzard sweeping across Ontario put the kibosh on it. Didnt think it was worth to try and site in a varmint rig in high winds and blowing snow.

Made for an interesting day shooting informal clays though, lol.

Im gonna try for this week, so I'll let ya know how they shoot.
 
non-reloadable also means alot of the people who shoots these dont police their brass anymore and there is a boat load on the ground at the range. I'm thinking of building some magnet with wheels to pick them up and sell the cases for the metal down the line.

Edit, I wonder how long it would take with the amount of steel cases I see all the time to pay this back and start making money out of it :D
