Stock Norinco M14?

I had problems with the rear sights on my poly and replaced them with new sights from 7.62mm firearms .com. Ordered new sights and an arms 18 scope mount, came through customs no prob. 5 min install and the new sights work great!

I just bought one two weeks ago, took it to the range to zero the iron sights. 100 rounds, no malfunctions or stoppages. End of the day shot 5 rounds at the steel plate 200m, got three solid hits that everyone noticed!

That's with a brand new Norinco M-14, out of the box, with a trigger that's not even close to "broken in". No optic scope or red dot, just the original Chinese made, US-designed iron sights!

I do plan on modifying it, modestly, but frankly I'm happy with the results right out of the box. Just don't make the mistake of thinking you can plunk down $450 and expect actual military-grade sniper performance...but you can get pretty close to that after some significant modifications, for less than an American would have to pay! :D

So if/when I get one where is the best place to get them from? I'm thinking about getting one from Marstar.

Alot of other people on here were thinking that too we all put in a preorder months ago ...they are still waiting :nest:..I found a good deal on a used one on the EE as I got tired of waiting....check out some of the other sponsors sites up top ...Ellwoods is a good dealer

Theres a store in town that sells them for $539...but I think it might be worth the wait.
Any Idea when marstar will have them again? I'm ok with waiting as long as i get it before winter.

give them a call, the other suppliers have then for around 440 if its going to be a long wait

Wow, seems like there is a lot more positive feedback than I thought!
So are there any mods that you would deem necessary? If it comes to doubling the life of the rifle or easily increasing accuracy I would do it in a heartbeat.

Quadragon, I'd clean the rifle, lube where necessary and browse the hell out of CGN, lots of good tips here. If I recall correctly there's a thread under 'main battle rifles' that'll clear lots up and answer questions you never knew you had.

Here's a couple bones tho'; don't shoot heavy bullets, heaviest 168gr. Clean the barrel and action, don't take the gas system apart too much. Try to stay away from corrosive ammo; if you shoot that stuff, clean that night, including the gas system!! When cleaning the gun have a close look at what you're cleaning to find any problems that might appear; these are Chinese copies, not the original. Geez, other than 'find money so you can shoot the thing' (increasing accuracy ;) ), I think that's all I have for ya!

If I were you I'd get one from SFCR with the two magazines for $439, they have 3 in stock I believe.

If you're planning on using iron sights then your first upgrade could be a Tartan Tactical Op Rod, it's supposed to really cut your group size down.

where do i buy?

Saw about 15 of these in Yorkton,Sk today. One black and the rest were camo.I think it was about 440. for the black and a little more for the camo units. This was at the home hardware. They do mailorder if anyone is interested.

Does anyone know the quality of the wood stock on the Norinco? I prefer the wood look over everything else.

Mines pretty much stock, but with a new spring and Italian Garand sights. The stock (chu wood) has also been refinished, and I think it looks great.

I've been kinda busy and also figured i'd let all you folks throw your advice in before i waded in with mine LOL

The chinese m14 type rifles are an awesome "bang for the buck" any way you slice it.
I get asked all the time..... "are these rifles okay out of the box? With all the threads on CGN I'm worried it'll be a waste of money and don't want to throw big coin at upgrades"

my reply...... all the threads on CGN show the Massive, cult like following this fantastic rifle has created (some blame me and Hungry and of course marstar for this :D ....) . Most are good to go right out of the box.... after a meticulous cleaning
, ensuring all oil and grease is removed from the entire action. I then generally refer folks to the stickies (threads at top of forum) here to soak up as much info as they can. I then tell them that if you are a tinkerer..... or maybe fantasize about being a gunsmith hehehe the M14s/m305 rifles are fantastic fun to tweak tune and customize.... for low initial investment.

things to be on the look out for
crappy front and rear sights
barrels slightly out of index(not rotated to top dead center)
and really..... any other little issues are the same found in rack grade real m14's such as loose oprod guides (the part on the barrel the oprod/charging handle rides thru)
Generally these rifles digest 7.62 nato surplus ammo AND .308 commercial ammo between 147 and 168 gr (174gr being the rifle's tolerance peak due to gas pressures)

I would say shop around for the best deal you can get and go for it.
clean her as per the info in the stickies and go shoot her.
report any adverse findings or incidents to us here on the board and know that there are loads of us here to give helpful advice learned from our own adventures with this rifle.

now and explanation into some of the upgrade parts
M1 garand and genuine m14 front and rear sights are compatable and an excellent upgrade all around
National Match Oprod Spring Guide rods are an excellent upgrade and recommended both for parts longevity due the guide rod keeping the spring straight and the oprod in a repeated path with less wiggle during cycling. The guide rods also have proved to shrink groups or at the least cause groups to be more consistant.
-NOTE the Tartan Tactical NM guide rod is for the time being no longer availlable.
-Marstar sells one when they have it in stock
-NEA is on the cusp of releasing one as well.
** U.S. made guide rods (springfield, brookfield, sadlak, ect) are for u.s. made springs
which are a different diameter then thier chinese counterparts. BOTH do an equal job for what they are designed for.

stocks..... I'm not a big fan of chinese stocks but my favorite ones are the nicer wood ones of several years ago (before the moldy ones in 2007). Other than that usgi walnut, boyd's walnut or usgi fiberglass..... and then of course there are the custom stocks made by myself :D

so, long and short....... these rifles are excellent value for the money, fun to own as is or tweaked and tuned and we have this great forum to share experiences or reach out for assistance when questions arise or troubleshooting is needed.

Well thanks to you guys I'm sold on a norinco M14 :D

.30/06 FTW-looks very nice! How did you finish it?

Now to scrape together some cash....

I purchased an Norinco M14 from TradeEx recently, Great rifle, not swamped in grease, just this oil. I did not need to (god forbid anyone doing this) put it in the dish washer? Just a good old fashioned wipe down. The stock is plastic, looks good, very sound, action fits tight. Cold be bedded but will do that with a Boyds stock. The front site c/w bayonet is not welded and fits tight (although the groove machining is less than perfect, a bit fugly). The flash hider is bored out to the same dia as an M1A rifle. it's not closed like a USGI flash suppressor.

Chamber appears to be chrome plated, but is not chrome plated at the muzzle. Gas system is in perfect alignment, no need for shimming. The piston is chrome plated but not on the arm. I am not sure is unitizing the gas system will accomplish anything, they do not move, they gas system is tight. The gas system locking ring stops easy movement at the 5 o'clock position and needs to be lightly tapped to close on 6 o'clock. The actions has a slight ping when let off to close as does the hammer when fired with snap caps.

Upgrades, Well I bought a BM59 rear sight, Don't know why, this rifle has a good rear sight worked as it should. My bad. I have a rod guide coming as well as a NM suppressor / front sight. all I need to do is sight it in.

Overall I'm happy, nice to have another in my hands since my TRW M-14 was traded for my C1A1.
