I've been kinda busy and also figured i'd let all you folks throw your advice in before i waded in with mine LOL
The chinese m14 type rifles are an awesome "bang for the buck" any way you slice it.
I get asked all the time..... "are these rifles okay out of the box? With all the threads on CGN I'm worried it'll be a waste of money and don't want to throw big coin at upgrades"
my reply...... all the threads on CGN show the Massive, cult like following this fantastic rifle has created (some blame me and Hungry and of course marstar for this

....) . Most are good to go right out of the box.... after a meticulous cleaning
, ensuring all oil and grease is removed from the entire action. I then generally refer folks to the stickies (threads at top of forum) here to soak up as much info as they can. I then tell them that if you are a tinkerer..... or maybe fantasize about being a gunsmith hehehe the M14s/m305 rifles are fantastic fun to tweak tune and customize.... for low initial investment.
things to be on the look out for
crappy front and rear sights
barrels slightly out of index(not rotated to top dead center)
and really..... any other little issues are the same found in rack grade real m14's such as loose oprod guides (the part on the barrel the oprod/charging handle rides thru)
Generally these rifles digest 7.62 nato surplus ammo AND .308 commercial ammo between 147 and 168 gr (174gr being the rifle's tolerance peak due to gas pressures)
I would say shop around for the best deal you can get and go for it.
clean her as per the info in the stickies and go shoot her.
report any adverse findings or incidents to us here on the board and know that there are loads of us here to give helpful advice learned from our own adventures with this rifle.
now and explanation into some of the upgrade parts
M1 garand and genuine m14 front and rear sights are compatable and an excellent upgrade all around
National Match Oprod Spring Guide rods are an excellent upgrade and recommended both for parts longevity due the guide rod keeping the spring straight and the oprod in a repeated path with less wiggle during cycling. The guide rods also have proved to shrink groups or at the least cause groups to be more consistant.
-NOTE the Tartan Tactical NM guide rod is for the time being no longer availlable.
-Marstar sells one when they have it in stock
-NEA is on the cusp of releasing one as well.
** U.S. made guide rods (springfield, brookfield, sadlak, ect) are for u.s. made springs
which are a different diameter then thier chinese counterparts. BOTH do an equal job for what they are designed for.
stocks..... I'm not a big fan of chinese stocks but my favorite ones are the nicer wood ones of several years ago (before the moldy ones in 2007). Other than that usgi walnut, boyd's walnut or usgi fiberglass..... and then of course there are the custom stocks made by myself
so, long and short....... these rifles are excellent value for the money, fun to own as is or tweaked and tuned and we have this great forum to share experiences or reach out for assistance when questions arise or troubleshooting is needed.
