If the owner is the type to drop the cat off in the country, you could bet there the type that wouldent follow the licence/chip rules anyway.

Ya but us "stupid" bumkins kill them if they become a problem on our farms. It is the irresponsable Citiots that drop them off in the country which is likely whats happening in Transams case. I do believe he stated that early in the thread.

I've lived in the city and country, and regardless of location, if you're taking care of the problem you're not in the set of people I call stupid. I didn't mean to imply such at all. The ones who let it get out of hand, regardless of location are the idiots and are stupid... And we all know they exist all over.

I totally agree that if someone brings a rat, I mean cat out 'to the country' with some ridiculous romanticized notion of 'freeing' it to 'a better life'... I won't even say it cuz the mods will ban me- but we're on the same page :mad:
 
I have no cats.

I don't like cats.

It is my belief that anyone who has cats (or any other livestock for that matter) should keep them on their own property.

Any cat on my property is by default a feral cat, and feral cats are shot on sight.

Therefore, it follows that I have little difficulty with feral cats.

We once had a neighbor who was too lazy to fence, and had pigs that ran loose. They would get into our garden.

Now it happens that I like pigs, especially with mashed potatoes and fresh corn, and mixed with moose meat in sausage. Every time the pigs came I butchered one. We ate pork. Our friends ate pork. We all made sausage. Pretty soon our neighbor saw the merit of a good fence, and the pigs stopped coming, and everyone was happy.

Life really doesn't have to be very complicated. It's all in how you deal with it.

And like I said earlier, it didn't bother me they were around until they sprayed in the garage and spilled the cans.. It just called for war..

But seeing what they're capable of doing by wrecking the bird population (Purple martins are a saving grace for bugs around here) if I started seeing dead martins, I'd definitely be investing in some kind of.. revenge..

I also have a 5 foot wire mesh fence which discourages them from coming in the yard but if they do the 3 terriers and 50 attack ducks make short work of them. Never had to actually shoot one.;)

I have barn cats.
Currently there are four cats living about and around the farm.
I once had nine cats :eek:, however the coyotes keep the numbers down.
From time to time a stray appears.
I live-trap the animal and take it to the vet.
If the cat is healthy. It gets neutered/spayed and released on the farm where I caught it.
If not healthy, I kill it, and use it for coyote bait.;)

I don't have a rat or mouse problem, and they even kill a lot of moles.
They do kill the odd bird, but very few.

None of these cats are pets, nor do they have access to my home. They are working for my benefit.
Once the cat is neutered, no more spraying.

Just sayin' Eh!

:D But at the end of the little story I wonder how happy everyone is, I wouldn't be happy if my supply of free pork was suddenly cut off. :eek: :D

Don't the vet bills get high??
 
Finally - as much as I love to dispatch cats with what ever I happen to have on hand (12, 16, 20 ga, .22. .22 mag, and crossbow - that was a sweet shot at 50 yards!), I also am a proponent of chemical warfare... a little ASA ( 2 Aspirin - non-coated) dissolved in milk will make the tabby's go away for good too. Just dont have a crawl space where they can crawl into to die and stink up the place!

This is useful information! Would you happen to know if a cat killed by this method poses a threat to other animals that might scavenge the carcass? I'm guessing no...?
 
I'm a dog person, but I don't hate cats...or any other critters. When I lived in the city, I even had one...a neutered, de-clawed adoptee that never left the apartment.

But I agree, they fill a niche that doesn't exist in nature. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but if a fox takes a chicken from us I don't find it nearly as irritating as seeing a cat slinking through the yard with a songbird in its mouth.

My neighbour (the nutty cat-lady's husband, who must have the patience of a saint!) has told me that when the two of them hear a single shot from the direction of my place, his wife normally gives a plaintive little "awww...." while he secretly smiles and does a fist-pump. One more that he doesn't have to worry about her catching and caging!

Usually shot on sight in the winter since they do all sorts of damage to equipment, not to mention that they put undue pressure on small game and other wildlife.
 
There is an unwritten rule in the country though : If it wears a collar or any other identifying mark, it ain't feral, let it go.

Keep your uncollared pets on your own yard.

Here's a thought... keep ALL your pets in your own yard. And livestock. And kids. And opinions. And trash. etc

Granted, I used to feed the neighbors dog from the farm a mile over whenever he came to visit at the old place. Poor thing was always lonely... and hungry as hell. But if it's a cat, I don't care if the damn thing is wearing a flashing neon sign six feet high with a special letter of commendation from the Queen pinned to its ass, the damn thing's goin down.
