SKS: Optics, sights & mounts.... update feb 16, 2010

reciever cover mounts have trouble holding zero, and are a pita to remove every time for cleaning, especially if you want it to hold zero after you reinstall it. it can be done but drill and tap mounts are so much better in that they hold zero and dont need to be removed for cleaning, plus they let you mount a fullsize scope.

My weaver Convertamount.

I did mine a little different from the ones posted earlier... The wrong parts showed up in the mail. I think there are two top mount versions. One is short, one is taller. I got the short one so I made due.

Those are dummy rounds I made with my buddy's Lee Press too, btw.

That's the nice thing about the Weaver Converta mount you can use different configurations to mount it to the SKS receiver, unlike other mounts. The only concern I can see is running out of adjustment on your red dot to obtain zero. Have you sighted it in yet?

Well, initially, I had it set up wrong, with the convertamount too far forward to use stripper clips. During this time, I tried to zero it and you are correct, I ran out of adjustment vertically on the red dot. The red dot needs to sit a tad higher in the front than in the back (in my case at least).

So, I took 4 hacksaw blades and cut my own weaver notch, except I didn't notch it all the way, I sawed about a 1/2 notch. So, the depth on the front notch isn't as much as the depth on the rear notch. This gives the front end of the red dot the extra adjustment I need. It's basement zeroed now. I.E., when I look at something at the other end of the basement thru my irons, then look at the dot, they are at the same POI. My irons hit 2 inches low at 25M so I have my dot set high correspondingly. I've yet to zero 100% at the range though. I'll let you know how it goes.

nice work greg, it looks a little high though. Is the forward inletting and holes for mounting it further forward, or something else?

It isn't too high. Kind of a "chin-weld" thing. Plus there's no kick on the 7.62x39 anyways :p As for the repeatability of a cheek weld vs. a chin weld, I'm not too concerned since it's a red dot set up as of now. I'll get a raised cheek pad in the future if it bothers me too much. Plus it gives me just enough clearance to get the dust cover off for cleaning, and I can see my irons perfectly, which I like. I wanted my irons because they're Williams Firesights, and:

As for the forward holes, the mount was too far forward initially which blocked stripper clips so I moved it back. Any ideas for pluggin em?

Just installed the choate mount. did not have a drill press.
I damaged the drill bit twice when breaking through. i suggest drilling all the holes 90% through then carefully going all the way through on each. probably not an issue if you have a drill press. or maybe i'm just doin it wrong.

Front sight adjustment tool.

10 minutes with a dremmel and an old #2 phillips bit. Just keep it with your bit set in the range bag.

Has anyone ever considered the so-called "indestructible scopemount" made of a piece of angle iron welded onto the side of the receiver?

 welding hardened steel is not a good idea. It would more than likely wind up cracking. Drilling and tapping to mount some sturdy angle iron on the other hand would be just the same as a choate mount, albeit not as pretty. I was going to go this route before deciding on modifying an aluminum shotgun mount, but one member on here used aluminum angle and it worked great.

anyone know where I can get a middle mount for my sks? As in taking out the rear old site and adding a mount for a red dot optic? Nothing on ebay or sites I have tried.

Thanks :) If you can PM me greatly appreciated
