.375 rifles anyone???

Not I, my rifle means a great deal to me, and I go to extremes to use it. Something to hand down to my son as well, and the more memories I build with it, the fonder of it I become and the more dedicated to it as well. I've done better in recent years, and could afford a higher end rifle, maybe a custom GMA .375 barreled action I would do the stock for, and I thought about it. That line of thinking died when I remembered the memories built with my favorite rifle. We're all different, I don't like to have guns I don't hunt with unless they're expressly collector guns like Oberndorf banner sporting rifles or pre-war M70's, and don't like to borrow guns either.

I admire the guy to whom hunting's just about his boots and clothes, but I'm not him, there's literally a bond to my favorite rifle and shotgun and I'll go out of my way to use them. I'm sure I'll be using them in 30 years still as well. Since they're easy to feed and shoot to point of aim with any ammunition I've tried, and that's a lot (.375 H&H and 12 gauge), that makes life easier for me. Not everybody has the same desires or cares, but those are mine. :)

I live in BC due to this I have absolutely no interest in ever going to Africa = 375RUM...

:D

I'm from BC and the Rockies Alberta, and trust me, there are a lot of reasons to go Cam! Everything there is bigger, tougher, and a different flavour of wild. Last April in Zim I was on a 750,000 acre conservancy one day, and got out of the Land Cruiser to take a leak, I was told to take my rifle so I shrugged and did so, found myself pissing on fresh lion tracks. Had a Leopard outside my tent on my first night too. Then there's the feeling of creeping to 20 yards of less from Cape Buffalo in the jess and long grass, it's special alright. Back to a place, and almost different time, when we were truly part of that pleistocene era wild. Forgive my pontifications!

I don't think I'd be so quick to write off the rest of the world.:D My sometimes hunting partner lives in BC, hunts like fiend and has amoung other things six grizzlies under his belt along with God knows what else. In spite of this he seems to find time to hunt 3 different countries on 3 different continents with me.(for the record, he has a .375 H&H) No signs of slowing down either.

Its not about what's better, its that everything is different. Seeing and experienceing different hunts, in different places has an appeal of its own.

Ardent I understand what our saying I just don't have an interest or maybe its time to think about Africa and considering I have the vastness of BC that after 30 years of heading out into myself I've only covered 1/2 of it to still explore...

I have lent my old Sako 375 H&H to a very good friend that took it and my loads to Africa so in a way a part of me has already been there.

Dogleg not dissing Africa I just do not have the desire it isn't in me may have to do with I know the laws here I carry handguns here and when I walk out onto an alpine ridge/meadow it still leaves me breathless at its beauty.

I am also into traveling/hiking solo going where I want when I want there are so few restrictions on me here...

Like I said I understand the desire of others to go I just don't have that desire myself...

and yes I have traveled extensively...

And yet somehow, hunters with wildcats and even the .375 RUger have managed to hunt all over the world....

How is this possible?:p

Its possible to use pretty much anything you want. Its also possible to make things more complicated than they have to be for no benefit.

Well maybe not actually no benefit, a gun nut can get a lot fun out of little arcane details that won't make any difference in the outcome of the hunt, or mean anything to anyone else. It's just that those details may come at a price.

I know what you're saying there too, done a lot of BC backcountry trodding, second to none. In more than 30 countries of travel, only Zimbabwe compared for me to the beauty of our home, it's worth a look! It is unreal.

Here's a picture of my current 375 H&H, probably the last one I'll need, it's a pre-64 Winchester 70 with a Griffin and Howe quick release scope mount and a Kollmorgen scope. Just about everything that can be said about the 375 already has been, I'd just add that I agree completely that it is the best choice in a 375 if you hunt internationally. In Africa the chances are that your PH will also be shooting a 375 H&H in my experience. I really favour 300 grain Nosler Partitions as the projectile but I've also had good success with the 285 grain Grand Slam and the 300 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. To me a 375 H&H goes best in a CRF rifle, others may disagree, I used to have a Voere Titan II in 375 H&H and it gave me constant problems.

Zambia and Bostwana on my opinion (that i share with myself) are better ...
and of course Yukon is over those ...

Ok I'll start thinking with a more open mind...

So if I ever go to Africa this is one of the the 375's I will take it is a 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 375JDJ = 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps and I would not hesitate to shoot out to 300 yards with it where the velocity will still be over 1800fps... :)

and yes many elephant have been shot with this cartridge so no I will not be under-gunned... OK I'll have my 375RUM along as well...

Vic falls, the Limpopo, the Gomos... not sure where in Zim you've been but Botswana has much less to offer geographically if you ask me! (I'll be back to Africa in Botswana this October, will do a more thorough comparison) Zim's heaven on earth for a guy like me, I tried to get a job there, problem is the wage in my trade was roughly akin to volunteering if I wanted to live a western quality life. Later in life I'll try and live there a couple years.

vic falls can be seen on the Zambian side too ..

limpopo is very beautiful on Bos side ...

okovango in the north Bos is a purety too ...

and i loved the caprivi band while i was in Namibia too.

the northern Zambia side with tanzania border is something to be ssen too ...

and i felt more safe in the other countries than in Zim but that s only my opinion ...

OMG, you must not take that! You might lose your ammo! :p

Yeah GH I know but it is such a cool little rifle that I couldn't not risk it...

I was thinking more about hunting elephant with a single-shot,

Many elephants have been shot with T/C Contender handguns in 375JDJ...

:D
