Shotgun magazine restrictions

Most provinces have magazine restrictions for bird hunting, but how about when using a shotgun for big game?

A few years ago BC changed the laws so shotgun hunters hunting big game with single projectiles (slugs) weren't affected by the 2 shot magazine restriction that bird hunters must adhere to.

Theoretically, if you were hunting deer or black bear with this shotgun, you could fully load both magazines with slugs:

What are the rules regarding single projectile hunting in other provinces? Still bound by the bird hunter magazine restriction? Or did your province never have restrictions?

I was under the impression that in alberta the 3 round limit applied to everything.

But now that you bring it up, everyone I know has used 3 round limiting in the context of bird hunting.

I don't think I'd ever use the kel-tec. But it could be fun to take a full mag in my Fabarm out.

In New Brunswick, the only restrictions are duck/goose hunting at 3 shells. Other than that load what you can!

My Mossberg will hold 7rds of 2 3/4". Fun time for rabbits and grouse!

You must plug a semi-automatic or repeating shotgun so
that it will not hold more than a total of three shells in the
chamber and magazine combined.

Target, range use, etc for shotguns:
Semi-auto: 5 round.
All other manual repeters: no limit.

Remember that you must check the Criminal Code, Firearms Act and Federal and Provincial hunting regulations.

not sure there would be many situations where more then 5 shells would be useful for hunting so the kel tec would probably just be big bulky, awkward and heavy in the bush.

I've had good times with my fully loaded 835! Yes you are correct, that if you need 6-7 rds... well something is wrong, or it's really BIG, but I have fun with mine fully loaded!

Both Alberta and Saskatchewan, no 2+1 limit for big game with manually repeating shotguns.

IIRC both Alberta & Saskatchewan upland bird limit 2+1 in your scattergun.

Believe it or not, NS has no round limit for manually repeating shotguns for big game or upland game birds.

Yes maybe, but there are many other handy options out there too.
When wild boar hunting, my M37 Ithacas always give me a nice warm&fuzzy feeling

IN BC, crows are considered "Schedule C" animals, which means you can kill them at will, no license needed. I wonder what magazine restrictions (if any) apply to shooting crows? Anybody know about this in other provinces?

OK, so if I have a pump action shotgun in Ontario it needs to be plugged to 2 rounds in the magazine no matter what I hunt or do with the shotgun, even skeet shooting ????

Well this is the only thing i was able to find about magazine capacity

There is no limit to the magazine capacity for semi-automatic rim-fire long guns, or for other long guns that are not semi-automatics.

one concern we had here was guys carrying defense shotguns with unplugged mags in hunting season. I suppose they might have been open to a ticket for hunting with an unplugged magazine. Changing these laws made everythinhg clear.

I am going to check into this as I am not sure but I believe that just applies to game birds and ducks ....If I want to hunt bear or deer using a 12 gauge pump the 3 shot limit dosn,t apply

It still applies.

Their is no condition that I can find.

Just checked the ministry of natural resources hunting regulations Summary to confirm that when hunting ANYTHING with a shotgun in ontario it must be plugged to 2+1. Couldnt find any exceptions to hunting. Now shooting clays is entirely different and you could have a 100 round drum if thats what floats your boat. hope that clears up some of the confusion.
