Hi guys, i just buy a savage mark 2 tr and i just finish the *break-in* of the barrel. I tried couples of brands like CCI Blazer, Remington Cyclone, Rem. Target, Rem. Thunderbolt, Federal game shock, American eagle and Winchest####. And i must admit my best group at 50 yards is 7/8 out of a 5 shot clip... (4 @ 1/2 inch+ 1 flyer ) wich is not bad, but the problem is i dit it only one time with the CCI Blazer. My next grouping is with Remington target ammo, i did 3 consecutive grouping under 7/8 without any flyers...But jeez the powder in those stink alot !!! The Federal's was not bad. Any others ammo exept those three, are really a big deception ! I know this gun can make much better than this.

Maybe another Mark 2 owner can help me...???

I must admit i'm pretty noob with the 22lr caliber... dunno wich ammo to use... any help appreciated !!

: O thx, i heard about lower velocity/subsonic ammo's for this riffle...
Just couldn't not find them when i was shoothing yesterday moning...
There is so many brands/models... can't buy them all even if the money is not an issue !!! Or i will need a bigger ammo case :p

Any others ideas guys ???

try some CCI standard velocity target or some SK or lapua target ammo. The CCI std vel is the best cheaper ammo i have found in the Mk11

This...

My MKII TR loves both. At 100 yards the CCI SV will average .750-1.00'' 5 shot groups no problem. With SK Std Plus it will shrink a bit and average between .650''-.750''. But that is with a front rest, rear bag and almost no wind.

CCI Blazer is my practice/screw around ammo and @ 100 yards I have got the odd 1.00''-1.250'' group but it averages more around 1.50''-1.75''. Haven't had any type of consistency with Remington Target or Winchester T22 and have yet to try Eley.

Here is how various ammo shot in my Savage BTVS. Lapua Super Club is now sold under the SK brand name.

I only say this, as you've said you're a bit of a 22lr noob, but, you know you need to fire off about 20 rounds with any given ammo before you even bother to shoot a meaureable group with it, correct? The barrel needs to get conditioned to the round, before it performs at it's best. If you've been shooting federals all day, you can't just load up some lapua's and expect them to do their best on the first group. I usually fire 10 shot groups with my 22lr's, the first couple groups will have fliers, and just plain bigger groups than the rest, after switching ammo. Once I get those first 20 rounds down the pipe, it really starts to settle down. Again, you may have already known that, but if it helps, there it is.

Try various types and makes and start with low end SK or similar and work up to more expensive match types if necessary. There is much information stressing how testing is neccesary as there is a much variation beteween rifles and what performs.

Peter

Thx guys for all the replys...

I shot between 20 @ 30 shot with each brands...
I just did not counted the ones i'm not satisfied with.

The ones i shoot the less is the Reington Thunderbolt, because the barrel became so dirty when i'm shooting this ammo and the grouping was bad, i mean over 1.5 inch @ 50 Yards...

With the Remington Target, that was strange cauz the grouping was good but all the shots hit the targets a good 2.5-3 inch lower than all others ammo's i shoot that day...

I know it will be alot of testing, and i need to find a place where they sale those ammo you guys have spoke.

Thx again all and any futur advices is always welcome !!!

My Mark IIBV will do 1.25" groups or just under in no wind at 100 yards with Winchester T22 and that's seems good enough for me for the money.

I'd love to try some Eley, does anyone have an online source for a good supplier? If so thanks.

Check the tension in your receiver screws
I was having all sorts of trouble then I realized one was loose :D

ok i will check the screws before i shoot again... i just did not have the time to go shooting right now but i wil have more sare time in near future... can't w8 to try what you guys told me : CCI std. Vel., SK Target, Lapua Target, Eley Club, Eley target, SK Std....

eley sport, had a pretty good batch that seems to shoot well in a lot of different 22s, pistols, semis and bolts. You will reallly need to try a lot to find out which is best especially when you are trying to shave only 1/4 -3/8 inch off the size of your groups at 50 yards.

What do you want to achieve? 'Absolute' accuracy, or 'acceptable' accuracy?

Mine shoots Stingers and Quik-shok hyper velocity rounds accurately enough to make reliable kills on gophers out to about 100 yards, and to shoot 12 gauge hulls off the backstop at 50 yards with boring consistency.

I've found that the hyper velocity stuff is accurate enough and potent enough to deliver the results that I want, so I've never tried it with any of the match grade stuff - the difference between 3/4" groups and 1/2 or 1/3" groups is just academic for my purposes. And subsonic/solids won't deliver the terminal 'punch' that hypers do

its for target bench riffle only so i want to find what is more accurate, but i did not want to shoot too* expensive ammo. 22LR is fun cauz its cheap to shoot...
