I'm pretty sure cowboys didn't need att's for their pistol :) What purpose would it serve other than being a fun gun if you could carry any pistol you wanted?

But we can't :D

Y'know ardent - just because i know it'll piss you off to no end, my next acquisition is going to be 'Mississippi's' shotgun from "El Dorado" :)

Yes, and no respectively. It uses hammers, but not caps. However - if it came from the manufacturer like that...... (we've already got shotguns with that short a barrel, it would just mean having them sold with shortened stocks, just like the rossi)
 
One gets the idea that rangebob wants a certain type of holster!;) Good news is, I can do that! I thought the McQueen type of holster would need to be a bit more involved; does'nt appear to be so. Anyone else interested in one?

One of the original themes in this thread was to find a combination of gun, caliber, and holster that would be practical. And that combination would be somewhat mass produced.
I have no clue what practical would be.
I'm waiting to see what the vote will be, from those more expert/experienced than I. :)
Caliber was somewhat settled in the other thread.

The advantage of McQueen's holster is that the firearm doesn't have to be lifted/drawn up as far as a pouch holster would. The disadvantage is that it requires the ring, and it's 'proof' of utility is Hollywood.

There may be another holster design that would also work well.

Someone expressed that they didn't know what McQueen's holster looked like.
I've stumbled on a few pictures, and I'm posting them.

[There's also some debate in this thread as to the definition/line between practical(utility)/fun. My purchase, if any, will be for fun, but it would be cool if there was conscensus that it was practical (within the limitations of C68, assorted other law, and without ATC).]

far too many people getting their underware in a knot over nothing ......

who thought up phasers / laser guns ........ the scifi people in hollywood ...... and who here wouldn't give their left nut to have a real working one ????



as long as it fits in my backpack and goes "BOOM" when i pull the trigger , that is all the proof i need .
 
practicality

My 2 cents worth -

1 - the most "practical" caliber ( for me, I don't reload ) is 44 Mag... from a 12 inch barrel it should have some punch. ( more than a 6 inch revolver for sure )

2 - the "Steve McQueen" holster, altho lacking in any kind of "protection" for the gun, looks VERY light weight:D and quick to draw from.

3 - it is "practical" in the sense that it is so small and light that you would likely always have it with you... where legal in the bush of course

4 - very easy to use if need while inside a tent

5 - could easily be used to hunt with ( try shooting it lying down, resting on a log or stump ie like off a shooting bench, or even use a staff / shooting stick to steady it )

6 - and my favourite... anyone who trains shooting a rifle or shotgun wearing a just a shirt, will find that when wearing a jacket and /or a pack that quickly shouldering your gun will likely cause it to catch on the jacket / shoulder strap... try it and see. That 14" LOP may be just fine at the range of for taking your time shouldering the gun, not so hot for quick.

One could easily learn to hold the Ranch Hand out, even quickly, similar to holding out a handgun... no LOP concerns.

Defensive use is likely 10 to maybe 25 yards... I am willing to bet I could learn to keep shots on a pie plate at 25 yards.

Either that, or he really likes steve mcqueen's butt. :)

I'd be interested in picking up a holster of that style if it can be made to work. Might also make a good backpack style

I don't fell like giving up any money today so i won't take that :)

Actually - i'm hoping it's pie plate accurate to more like 50 - 75 with some minor upgrades to the sights and lots of practice.

yea if it works properly.. the part I dont like is how the barrel is held in by that weird thingy that holds it in by tension alone...

I would prefer a solid loop of leather to hold the barrel in so it doesnt bounce out and start wabbling around when I am hiking.

Also with that holster dont you think if you so much as jumped off of a rock (or helicopter :p) the rifle might come off of the hook and be scraped by the sharp deadly rocks that it falls upon! :eek:

This is why I am unsure of this kind of holster... but only testing it will tell..
