Hey fellas,

I am taking my turkey course at the Sportsman's Show this year. I just picked up a 26" vented ribbed barrel for one of my 870s off the EE. It comes with a modified choke. What are your thoughts on a 26" barrel with a turkey choke for turkey hunting? Any choke/barrel, brand, size, etc. recommendations that would be better?

Indian Creek chokes are pretty popular. I would suggest purchasing a factory Full choke and a couple of the cheaper mass produced X-Full or XX-Full chokes, then buy a couple of boxes of shells in different shotsizes. Shoot each choke with each load and pick the best.

In my experience you are better of with #6 shot in the mass produced chokes as you get pattern density that size 4's and 5's don't offer and this makes a big difference.
 
Good for you cbabes, turkey hunting is the greatest...

My Benelli has a 24 inch barrel and it shoots tight with an Undertaker after market extra full tube, and has done a splended job so far.:D

The original full choke would have been fine cause all my birds have been within about 30 yards.:)
 
A 26" will do nicely. It's not like you'll be stalking. Shooter's Choice, in Waterloo, wants $33.95 for a 12 ga. Turkey Super Full Remchoke. $32.95 for an Extra Full Remchoke. $9.95 for the wrench. Local gun shops will have 'em too. SC just puts their prices on-line. William's in Port Perry is closer to you.

I see Williams has a Polychoke that adjusts to different chokes including turkey. Are they "jack of all master of none" type chokes or worth looking at?
 
If you are doing the course at the sportsman show take a wonder around and see if you can find a deal on an extra full turkey choke. Usually a good selection of turkey chokes there.
 
Come and sit in on one of my seminars on the stage at that show and I'll show you the difference in a cheap choke and a aftermarket choke. Theres lots of opinions on chokes but something to keep in mind is your not going to get a 25 yard shot every year and the harder birds get to call and work in your going to be looking at 40 yard shots more common. Spend a little money on a good choke and save on the ammo you need to test.

I've spent double of the price in the cost of a new gun in chokes alone and it all boils down to two different chokes that stand out past all the rest,

Pure Gold -is number 1
Indian Creek -is number 2

both are very good in producing dence patterns at 40+ yards. Pick up a copy of "Learning the Ropes of Wild Turkey Hunting" DVD and you can see the different patterns you'll get out of different chokes and shells. That DVD will be at the sportsmen show.

Where can these be bought in Canada, for those that aren't going to the sportsman's show?
 
It depends on how far you want to shoot as well. I'm running 3.5" Remmy HD this year and I'm getting avg 120 pellets in a 10" circle with a good distribution in a 20" with just the stock full choke. It also has a good even pattern up in a closer distance.

Not to put you down or your combo, but that is not a very good pattern at all. I assume you shooting 40 yards, to start you do not need the 3.5 as all hunters seem to think the 3.5 is the biggest shell and will pattern better, but it don't. The 3.5 was introduced for waterfowl only and does nothing but pounds your shoulder shooting turkey loads. I've seen an easy 200 shot in a 10 at 40 with 3 inch shells. I'm not posting to bash people at all , I'm only posting the knowledge I know and have done...

No offence taken. I tested a bunch of shells from 2.75 to 3.5. That's the best pattern for my full choke. It's coming out of my extrema which is mainly my duck gun. Turkey is a 2-3 weekend a year thing for me and I'm more than happy to lose a few yards. The pounding is no issue for me. Didn't mind it patterning, I doubt one more shot this spring will be that much more problem.

I'm sure there are much more tighter patterning guns than mine, just as a casual turkey hunters I prefer to keep it simple and that pattern was good enough for me. A 3" may very well have excellent pattern as well.

A Full Choke is fine for Turkey and so are 2 3/4" shell's. Money better spent would be on decent Call's and knowing how to use them. So your not taking 50yd. pot shots at them.
JMHO.
