go to LeBaron or other places and look THROUGH the scope and not at the outside of it. i mean, that's what you're buying it for, right?
 
Personally I'd look at a Bushnell 3200 or Redfield $200 scope. On another note, can that rubber armoured Leapers scope use the Ruger rings, or can it only use the rings that come with it. Maybe they are special for that fluted rubber coating??

you could be wright on the leaper thing!? thats why I'm seeking info and opinions. but yeah they seem really nice but there are kinda out of my price range, I was looking more between 80 an 120$ range, And I know for alot of guys its silly but the look is something I'm looking for:p
 
in that price range, buying online probably won't do you well as you'd end up spending a sizeable chunk of your budget onh shipping. buy in a store, esp on no-tax days. try the bushnell trophy stuff, it's quite nice and optics are good. pop into lebaron and see if the trophy xlt 3-9x40 look good for you. redfield optics are nicer but i don't think even the 2-7 is that affordable.

where in this country are you located? maybe someone local can direct you to a good store.
 
You might something in the 1-4x range of magnification. Have you considered the Millett DMS? It has the illuminated dot with a 30mm tube. Good reports from what I have read and seemingly well-suited for the Mini-14.
 
I've had a silver Leupold Vaxi X Compact 3-9 on my stainless Mini-14 for many years. The combination works well and contrary to what many report on the accuracy of these rifles, mine is very good with either factory or hand loads.

you have a 3x9 by 40 or 32?

I totally agree. Personally I don't think you need to go more than a 2 x 7 scope on the mini. Most mini shooters don't shoot much over 150 yds and the 2 x 7 is ideal. Nice and light and the Bushnell 3200's are very rugged and reliable. I have 2 Bushnell 3200's on a couple of minis.

If you check out the Optics and Sights on the EE you can often find really good deals on these scopes. On my last purchase I got a brand new 3200 2 x 7 for under $200 and there was no tax and no shipping. Just be patient and check things out frequently on this forum.

I used to run a Weaver 4x shotgun scope on my 580 series mini and loved it. But of course, being a gun crank, I can't leave well enough alone and I threw on a Falcon Menace SIR 1.5-5x32 and LOVE IT. Lower magnification is the way to go on minis. Minis are also tough on scopes as their action is quite violent and they have a reputation for chewing up cheap scopes. I also agree that a 2-7x32 would be great, either a 3200 Bushy or a Redfield or Leupold would serve you well for years.

Lapping involves, obtaining a 1.000" solid bar or lapping bar and with the rings tightened to the bar, proceed to tighten to the base. Then remove the ring top clamps and add a small amount of lapping compound to be run inbetween the bar and bottom rings. Once you have made visual contact on both rings you are then reaqdy to mount the scope.
 
Be aware there is an issue with many of the new style 581 series Mini's. The Ranch rifle ring base cuts on the receiver are off...you end up with the scope being bent and tweaked and not lined up.
Hopefully Ruger has straightened this out by now on newer production but be aware of it. The 1" bar to check the rings is a minimum.

Don't assume all is well and crank down on a good scope before checking it.

Optics

Remember with glass, you get what you pay for..............a Bushnell or Tasco may be enough for the average rifle, but in firearms with slam-bang semi auto action, or, with heavy recoil, will it stand up?
Also, a precision rifle expected to shoot MOA or better probably needs superior optics..........and the cost is high....
 
The silver Vari X Leupold 3-9 compact I have on my Mini-14 has a 33mm objective (according to the Leupold scope specs) and it fits nicely in the supplied Ruger rings with enough clearance for Butler Creek flip-up caps. Leupold introduced the silver Vari X compact scopes in 1990 and mine was purchased around then.
