A little let down

I just got back from the Renfrew gun show. There were the usual guys asking $950 for a Norc SKS with about $250 with of Made In China tacticool crap on it, but there were somne half decent prices too.

I picked up a Tula SKS with birch stock; I figured I saved about $30-$50 over ordering it over the net. I also picked up 200 rounds of 7.62x39 for $4/box cash.

When I was looking at it, there was no cosmo on the outside; it was all nice and clean. That is waht I usually see unless they are pulling it out of a crate for the show (kids seem to love the crates of guns :)). Well, I got home and got the trigger lock off it; the guy left the cheap trigger lock on it that takes the 2 prong key, but I had no key, so out came the needlenose pliers. When I got it apart I was let down; the entier inside of the gun was squeeky clean with a light coat of gun oil over everythign. I was all set to start the time honoure process of digging cosmo out of it for the next 3 months (always seem to miss a spot), but got off easy.

I told my buddy that was there with me that I am a bvit suprised. I paid less for this gun than my buddy did for his Norc 11 years ago with crappy stock and the bayo lug cut off before coming into the country. The machining is much bettrer than the Norcs; I assumed it was just hype to sell them when they came in, but they really are better.

I got confused for a second there :)

I don't believe the Russians actually used Cosmo on the SKSs unless they clean them up on import. Mine was clean and I have never seen any of them in store with Cosmo either, all just with a heavy coating of oil.

I spent a pile of time cleaning the Norc up last time and had my afternoon planned for the Rusky. Since there was no cosmo, I had to do caprentry work instead :). I had been reading up on how to get the cosmo out (last time I just scraped away at it), so I kind of wasted my time. Oh well, my wife is happy I got that wall framed :).

If the latest batches of Russian coming in had cosmo, its been cleaned off by somebody and replaced with that icky machine oil. The ones imported to the US years ago were packed in cosmo, I see all kinds of reports of people buying them in the states and finding the gas tube full of 20+ year old hardened cosmoline. The Mosins coming in are slathered with it if you really want a cheap rifle you can spend hours cleaning...

I have had Russian SKS and chinese sks and seen very little if any difference. But thats just my experience. Actually the chinese had chrome bore witch I like.

I have it on very good authority that all russian SKS's had chrome lined bores. I just wish the gas tube and piston were the same :/

hmm it's possible, my "the history of the sks" type book seemed to say that all the russian ones did, but either it or (more likely) my memory might be incorrect. I don't have the motivation to check right now ;)

1949 to early 1951 dont have chrome bore unless the barrel was replaced during refurbishing and they only replaced barrel if was absolutely required. My 2 1949 have their originals non-chrome bore:)
