Savage Rimfires, how accurate???

My stainless, thumbhole Laminate Savage(don't know the model #) is a deadly .17 HMR and does well under 1" at a hunert yds. if there's no wind. I'd like to trash the accutrigger for something down around 4 oz. though. It's a dedicated gopher gun!!!
 
I have a Savage 93R17 FV, so all black synthetic with a heavy barrel and it's damn accurate.

I have only got about 100 rounds through it, on a not perfect day off my shoulder and a bipod it was doing 1 1/4" at 100 yards.

Could improve on my skill, the weather and the ammo to make a very accurate 17HMR!
 
I had a .22RF pre-accutrigger, laminated stock, heavy barrel model. I gave it to my son when he got his PAL. I'm not sure I can tell the difference between how it shoots and how my CZ452 Varmint shoots.

I'm sort of watching for a good deal on one of the thumbhole stainless models in .22 RF.
 
I have the savage with the stainless barrel and action, laminated thumbhole stock and accu trigger in .22 LR and it is by far the most accurate .22 I have ever owned or shot. And to be sure I have owned and shot a lot of .22s over the years. It is also a pretty pricey gun for a .22 and may not suit your budget. They offer many others at more easily digested prices.

I would say that the savage .22 rifles they are making today seem to be as good as anything out there and much better than most at the price point. Mine was proudly made in Canada in Lakefield Ont. Take a hard look at what they offer and get your hands on one in person. You may find you like it. Chances are it will shoot better than you can hold.
 
I have the 9317GV model, walnut stock and heavy blued barrel. Topped it with a Legend 4-12x40mm A/O the day I bought it.

For starters the accu-trigger is probably the best production trigger ever! The walnut on my rifle is very dark with a very detailed grain. The bluing is dark and rich, still.

The accuracy is 1 MOA with Federal V-shocks. Ive tried CCI TNTs and Hornady XTPs with equal results, Best group ever was 0.828" @ 100 yards with the Feds, all shot off bags.

I found it took a couple hundred rounds to break in the barrel and pull groups under an inch. If you really want to get the best from your hummer get a decent scope. I've had great results with the $200 bushnell but there are much better.

I bought a 17 cal Otis kit to clean my HMR, it can be pushed unlike a boresnake. Its the only cleaning tool I use for all my guns now.

The savages are probably the best all round rimfires on the market under $400.

Others contenders include Marlin, CZ, Browning and Ruger.
 
I have the Savage MKII F Camo, and like shredder0's gun it was made in Lakefield, Ontario. It is one very accurate gun and I have no regrets buying it. I have put a harris bipod and a Tasco Pronghorn Scope with turrets and mil-dots and it seems to work fine, the only thing I might do is upgrade to a better scope, but I will see how this one works first. Oh and it came with a free-floated barrel, which is a nice touch
 
The Savage is not the best gun out there for sure. But, it does really well considering the price. I would say it shoots about the same as the CZ and perhaps even better than the Anschutz 64 Sporter (Weatherby XXII) in .22LR. However, accuracy is very ammunition dependent. Best accuracy in.22LR is with top quality target ammo from Lapua and Eley. I don't shoot .17 HMR or .22 WMR, so can't comment on how that ammo shoots.
 
My two cents... I bought a sporter barrel expecting the results that everyone says the Mark II is known for... but then I learned that only the HB/varmint barrels are the ones known for astounding accuracy. Lesson learned but I still have the IIf because it's a great field gun.
 
I've got both. I have a Savage 93R17 BVTS and a Savage 93 BRJ .22 WMR. Both are laminate stocks. The 17 is stainless heavy barrel with the pepper laminate adn the WMR is that new heavy spiral fluted barrel with the Royal Jacaranda stock.

Both are real eye catching and probably the most accurate guns I've owned. You won't be dissapointed with either one.

I can't really tell you which one I like better than the other. I've had the 17 for 5 years and just got the WMR as I didn't have one and wanted one in my collection.

The 17 shoots long and flat like a laser beam and the WMR is putting quarter sized groups in paper at the range at 100 yds off a bipod and bench.

If you don't go with the fancy stocks, you can likely buy one of each for around $600 for the pair. Get them both!! :0)

I have one with a sporter barrel mark 2f which shoots sub moa 100 yards...

To be fair, I haven't fed it with "quality" ammo yet like SK std plus and above. I can get slightly above 1" groups (1.2") at 50 yards with the cheap stuff it likes the best. But I was really hoping for torn holes at 50... I now also own a CZ 452 american so that itch is well scratched.

I don't think you will find too many shooters who will slag the Savage rifles for accuracy.

I have a 93FVSS in 22WMR. I have been shooting Cheapo white box winchester ammo from Wallyworld. $9/box.
My results have been consistently 1" or smaller groups at 100yards when shooting from a bi-pod.
I am going to try some more expensive ammo and see if the results improve. But really; I don't know what more I can ask for?

I found even the sporter barrels to be quite accurate. I actually sighted one in at 50 yards then broke clays at 200 with it, we also shot at empty shotgun shells placed on their side at 100 and were able to consistantly hit or atleast touch the primer.

I am envious CSI guy...lol...as I cant decide which savage to buy and here you go owning both of the ones I was thinking of getting...lol
I have a few questions if you dont mind.....Is the 17 cal ammo alot more money than the 22WMR ? I know the 22WMR hits a bit harder and I plan on target shooting with it and as well maybe a few of gods little creatures will get to go to see him as well ......so for a target/hunting which would you prefer and in which cal?

I really like the look of the BRJ as that barrel looks great on it ..they make it in 17 HMR and 22 WMR and according to the specs it is 1/2 lb lighter than the 93r17 BVTS...

Decisions...Decisions...lol
