Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic

I put a Boyds JRS laminate on my tupperware Vanguard in .300 Weatherby, bedded and installed a Timnet trigger.

I can't remember whether it was a deep and abideing couriousity about makeing a $500 rifle into a $800 rifle, or finding something fun to do with a $99 special stock that motivated me. Either way, those vanguards are a lot of rifle for a very little money.

Name it. You can do anything you want.... new stocks, new barrels, new triggers. It is all a question of what you are after and wht you want to spend.

I had basically walked into the shop just to put a deposit down on another rifle and they were out. My buddy was looking at the Vanguard and I just cycled the action and it pretty much sold me. I'm not expecting sub MOA but we'll see what happens.

I'm thinking it'll be my quad/door jam rifle for a while. I plan on keeping it for a long time and I plan on slowly building it up.

My vanguard which shoots 1/3 MOA doesn't shoot reloads. I don't do any reloading. It works best with the Winchester 40 round value packs. With American eagle, it's like a shotgun though.

I also have a Vanguard in 300wm which I haven't done any grouping with it. It's only beeing hunting aside from sighting in but it's taken absolutely every animal it's even been pointed at.

Vanguards are awesome rifles.

What are my custom options(if any) besides paint job?

Chambered in .30_06

Custom Weatherby Vanguard .25-06 Rem

The rifle consists of a 22 1/2" #3 sporter contour SS McGowan barrel that was chambered, threaded, fit and cut by Dennis Sorensen. The muzzle is cut with an eleven degree target crown and the finish is bead blasted to a matte finish. It sits in a McMillan Edge stock that was inletted, glass bedded and floated by Dennis as well. The Vanguard action is fitted with a Timney trigger set at a crisp 3 pounds. The scope is a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42mm with the plex reticle. It is mounted in 1" standard Leupold rings and bases. The overall weight is 8lbs 6ozs.

-First I like how if the bolt is closed to the first notch and you pull the trigger it closes.

-Second I like how fast it strips down... 2 screws... ~20 seconds

-Third I don't like the plastic magazine and trigger guard (I'll upgrade that to metal hinged floor plate one day)

-Fourth If there's any pressure on the magazine the bolt kinda grinds against it during operation.

Other than the small little easy things to change... I love the rifle. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I had an extra Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 I put on it to get me through spring bear season. I'm hoping to get it sighted in this coming saturday.

Furthermore what would be the best way if possible to free float this rifle? (I'm a rookie when it comes to such activities)

What? I don't believe Vanguard's come with plastic magazines...they all have metal floor plates. I've seen a lot of them. None of them have plastic trigger guards.

What? Do you even have a weatherby vanguard? I don't think you do... Can you post a picture>?

Not necessary as evidenced by the 1/3 MOA mine shoots. But hey, apparently we have totally different rifles...Free-floating is an option to make inexpensive rifles accurate. It's not superior to a properly bedded rifle. It's a shortcut. Your rifle is already well bedded.

You are exactly right. The DM that Weatherby offers as an accessory is a plastic POS. Otherwise you are bang on. Maybe he doesn't have a Vanguard?

Do you still have the original floor plate? Supposedly it increases the rigidness of the stock which is good for accuracy.
