All these replies and not one vote yet for the best .300Mag of all- the 7mm Rem Mag
.....if recoil of the 300 Mags is an issue the 7mm Rem Mag deserves a look...
as an example...
here are some ballistics from Hornady's website...
7mm Rem Mag 162 gr SST® Superformance®
Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
3030/3302 2855/2933 2688/2598 2525/2295 2370/2020 2219/1772
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
-1.50 1.40 0.00 -6.20 -17.90 -35.70
Recoil in an 8.5 lb rifle = 21.0 ft/lbs
300 Win Mag 180 GR InterBond® Superformance®
Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
3130/3917 2927/3424 2732/2983 2546/2589 2366/2238 2195/1925
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
-1.50 1.30 0.00 -5.90 -17.30 -34.80
Recoil in an 8.5 lb rifle = 27.5 ft/lbs
note the whopping .60" advantage in trajectory of the 300 Win at 400 yards...and the stellar .90" advantage at 500 yards,...clearly a miss can be avoided with this load...
note the 300's amazing bone crushing advantage in 500 yard energy of 153 ft/lbs...clearly this will punch right thru an elk while the little 7mm bullet will stop just under the hide..
and,..you can get all of the above advantages for a measly 37% increase in recoil.....this can make the difference between stiches in the forehead or none when shooting from an awkward field position.....

The 7mm Rem Mag....,...the best 30 caliber magnum for the "average" shooter..

YMMV
I like them all and have the 7 Mag, a 300 Win and a 308 Norma.,,,but there's isn't any real world difference between them in the field.
