Which 300 magnum

IMR4350 eh? You must be old school! :) That's a fairly hot load; must be pushing about 2900 ft/s? How does it group?

Yes, old school...... :p Rated at ~ 2,960 fps I believe. Never personally chrono'd it, though.

But it's done well in a Ruger 77 tangsafety, Win Model 70 XTR, Browning BBR, and Browning A-bolt that I have seen it used in. Will do sub 1" @ 100 from my A-bolt. I've seen it do 3 shot clover leafs in the others.

Very nice! Since everyone's now talking load data, I chronied the Federal Power-shok with 180gr Speer Hot-cors between 3030 ft/s to 3050 ft/s out of a stock Rem 700 with a 24" barrel. They seem to be hot loads!

.300 weatherby mag is a nice all around caliber capable of killing moose and elk no problem, slightly more expensive than .300 win mag but is also slightly better, if you have a lot of money to buy a nice weatherby rifle in .300 weatherby mag then i would go for it, if you are very wealthy and want max power/ long range performance try the .30-378 weatherby, but at ~$130 per box of 20 thats pretty pricey.

All these replies and not one vote yet for the best .300Mag of all- the 7mm Rem Mag ;) :D

.....if recoil of the 300 Mags is an issue the 7mm Rem Mag deserves a look...

as an example...

here are some ballistics from Hornady's website...

7mm Rem Mag 162 gr SST® Superformance®

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
3030/3302 2855/2933 2688/2598 2525/2295 2370/2020 2219/1772
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
-1.50 1.40 0.00 -6.20 -17.90 -35.70

Recoil in an 8.5 lb rifle = 21.0 ft/lbs

300 Win Mag 180 GR InterBond® Superformance®

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
3130/3917 2927/3424 2732/2983 2546/2589 2366/2238 2195/1925
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
-1.50 1.30 0.00 -5.90 -17.30 -34.80

Recoil in an 8.5 lb rifle = 27.5 ft/lbs

note the whopping .60" advantage in trajectory of the 300 Win at 400 yards...and the stellar .90" advantage at 500 yards,...clearly a miss can be avoided with this load...

note the 300's amazing bone crushing advantage in 500 yard energy of 153 ft/lbs...clearly this will punch right thru an elk while the little 7mm bullet will stop just under the hide..:D

and,..you can get all of the above advantages for a measly 37% increase in recoil.....this can make the difference between stiches in the forehead or none when shooting from an awkward field position.....:D

The 7mm Rem Mag....,...the best 30 caliber magnum for the "average" shooter..:)YMMV

I like them all and have the 7 Mag, a 300 Win and a 308 Norma.,,,but there's isn't any real world difference between them in the field.

For you fellows who's 300 winmag rifles like IMR 4350, I'd reccomend giving RL-17 a try.

My results with it were excellent, both in terms of accuracy and velocity, with 180gr bullets.

A 300 WSM loaded with 165 TSX is a potent round and will do everything from deer to bear to moose or elk. I've taken moose, deer and bear with mine. All went down fine.

So here I am in Whitehorse doing a few things I seldom engage in: shooting a .300 Winchester, shooting a SAKO, and shooting from the bench! If memory serves the load was a 165 gr BT over a case full of IMR 4350. The 500 yard rams didn,t last long.

dont tell you shoot the last week here ... we still have some snow lol ....

The 7mm Rem Mag is a whole other 'ladder', but if you want the best there:stirthepot2:, go to its predecessor, the 7x61 S&H:D.

Don't know if you want to know, but a recent local auction sold a S&L M60 7x61mm in very good shape with a scope for $540.

.....if recoil of the 300 Mags is an issue the 7mm Rem Mag deserves a look...

6.5mm Rem Mag 120gr:

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
3217/2758 3006/2407 2804/2095 2611/1817 2427/1569 2250/1348
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500
-1.50 1.20 0.00 -5.60 -16.30 -32.90

Recoil in an 8.0lb rifle = 13.1 ft/lbs

Note the 1.6" trajectory disadvantage of the 7mm Rem Mag at 400 yards and 2.8" at 500 yards. And the measly 60% increase in recoil, even with a heavier gun! All this for an extra 424 ft-lbs.

6.5mm Rem Mag, the best 7mm mag for the "average" shooter! :p And we could continue the descent into lower calibers...

Even though at an auction, that definately sounds like a decent price although I'm not all that familiar with the M60. My 7x61 S&H is a 68DL and a 65DL I have in 308 NM, the prices you see them go for is usually at least twice + that.
