It's too bad you felt bad enough to quit. I hate to see people leave for such a reason.
For my self, I take the view that most people are generally decent but anyone can have a bad day or just a bad moment. We all have our moments (there are certainly some things I've said in the past that I wish I could un-say) but if you happen to catch someone at the wrong instant your impression of that person may be irreparably damaged. This is unfortunate because this tiny snapshot of a moment in a person's life does not a character define. From my long experience in this sport, most of the shooters I know would give the shirt off their backs if someone was in need.
In the shooting sports we all tend to be individualists. As a personality trait, this almost a necessity if you think about it. As such it's no small wonder that we seem to argue continually but make no mistake; most of us are good friends.
Only other caveat here: there always seems to be one or two in any group who have generally cantankerous personalities and they are certainly no fun to be around. I think this is the same in any sport, or any cross-section of humanity. I don't think it's fair to judge us all by that standard.
