The Ontario turkey season is just around the corner. Anyone getting excited yet? What are the birds doing in your neck of the woods? I hunt mainly in WMU 63 Lanark Highlands. Great deer hunting, but spotty for turkey. I plan to get out tomorrow morning to see what I can hear on one of my hunting properties. Good luck to everyone!
I also got out to the range a couple of day ago to sight in the shotgun. I use a reddot on my 12ga Mossberg 500. The choke I am using is an UnderTaker .665 XXFULL turkey choke. Here's the pattern I got @ 30 yrds using Winchester Supreme Turkey #6 3" loads. They kill at both ends :D

I am excited, going to try my best to guide my younger brother to a bird. And I have some excellent private property lined up and I have been scouting a tom with a 10 inch plus beard. Should be a good season.

Good luck everyone.

Have to get my tag still. Did some scouting last week. Found a few fields with gobblers/ jake in it. Saw a field with 5 toms strutting shoulder to shoulder with rows of hens coming every which way out to them. We secured permission for that field, but have yet to able to contact the land owner for the right of way to get to the back property.

Got the new mouth call broken it, just have to not forget about my license tmr so I can get a tag.

Just got my tag over the toll free number with the Ministry and entered the antlerless draw for 46 & 49.

Oh ya! Ready to go. Heading out Saturday AM for a quick scout to confirm a few spots that have produced in previous years plus check out a couple of properties I have never hunted on before.

Can't wait! I have my tags. Recently got a .655 Mad Max choke. Still have to pattern. I bought the same ammo #6 Winchester Supreme Turkey 3". They are on sale right now at Bass Pro for $15 down from $17 for 10 shells.

I have my course this Sunday then I think season starts in a couple weeks in WMU 88...I haven't patterned my gun, got any decoys, learned to use a diaphragm...good thing I have friends that have been doing it for years :)

Getting very excited for the opener, took advantage of the nice weather to do some patterning.

I had already settled on using Winchester Supremes in #5 shot size. Got out yesterday and tried out both Remington and Federal dedicated turkey loads. Federal has them all beat out of my choke, that's what I'll use this year.

Target at 40 yards (sorry for the terrible artwork...) shooting Federal turkey loads, 3", 2 oz. of #5 shot, Flitecontrol wad. Gun used was a BPS with a new Primos Tightwad turkey choke, 85 pellets in a 10" circle, 25 of them in the poorly depicted head/neck area.

Nice pattern there Yorgi. That Federal flitecontrol wad ammo is nice, but you have to shot it through a fairly open choke. The wad is designed to stay with the shot column for a tighter pattern. A tight or ported choke strips away the wad too early & negates the advantages of the flitecontrol wad.

Thanks glang1!

I read the exact same comments as you did and had very low expectations of a good pattern. My choke is fairly tight (.660") as well as being ported, yet the Federals had a more uniform and tighter pattern than both Remington and Winchester!

Starting to pack tomorrow for my annual trip down - got my tag and patterned the shotgun. I sure like those Federal Flight Control Wad shells - nice dense patterns at 35 yards.

My daughter is supposed to join me when she is done exams - she has never hunted them before.

Apparently birds didnt have a good winter near Elmvale where I hunt - landowner told me snow and coyotes were hard on them. Oh well, none up here so what the hell - looking forward to the hunt.
