Ontario Turkey hunting. Anyone getting exicited yet?

Have set trail cam's in my property up North. Never saw any significant number of turkeys there before, but neighbors insist that they have been seeing more of them. If my trail cams pick up any signs, I will be setting shop there for first time.

Sure Meet me at the red barn with the black dog on the porch opening morning about 3.30 I will teach you how.Yes, Turkeys are not that smart but there are a lot of dumb hunters pursuing them, kind of evens out the field!

in our neck of the woods (manitoba) its not even a sport a couple of places we hunt there are flocks of 20+ birds. one place my buddy feeds his race horses at 730 every morning during turkey season i get there 745 stand at the edge of the pen along the bush where they come out and me and my little girl ( she's 11) both have a turkey by 815.

Turkeys are crawling all over the properties I hunt this year!!! down in WMU 94A and B I am pumped. Patterning the gun tomorrow, and secured 2 more properties for this year. Only problem is the extended forecast for here is not good at all, hopefully I can get a break or two in the weather before I go on vacation for a week (May 3rd-10th).

Here's a pick of my first bird I got ever last year 2nd day of the season called him in and by 6:30 I was back home lol.

Every night this week at about 6pm there's 3 toms in full strut and about 8 hens in the field behind my house.

The one I can see his beird dragging on the ground, and he's twice the size of the others. I can already tell he will be the trophy bird this year if I can get him.

Last year I saw 30+ turkeys hunting. Filled both my tags within a week

I might start scouting soon. I hunted 4 days last year and took 24.5 and 25.5 pounders two days in a row. I'm thinking this year I'll use a percussion shotgun for an added challenge.

Going on another scouting trip next Friday on the good friday. Last time I was out I saw 5 big birds in a back corner of the property I can hunt. Only problem is it backs into a public property as well and I do not have opening day off for hunting.

Nice!

picking up my new double bull darhorse blind on wednesday (needed more room for me and my new hunting partner) and setting up late afternoon for monday morning. fist time i take my daughter out for turkey's, we'll be going out monday and tuesday morning, can't wait to see her face when i call one in and she sees him struting and hears him drumming within a few yards..... she's 4 1/2 this year. i've been letting her wear my walker's quads today to get her used to wearing them for next week. i want her to be able to hear them even if there a long way off to keep her interested. we'll see if i can keep her quiet enough to bring them in. didn't work so well last fall when we went deer hunting...... :(
should be a good time anyway.
good luck everyone

i didn't get out last year with all the renovations to our farmhouse.
2009's birds. mine on the right and father-in-laws on the left. i had called in 4 birds and thes were the two biggest out of them. had them come within feet of us, drumming and struting for a few minutes. no better sound then to have them drumming right next to you.....

Hey..I live in Ottawa and we're seemingly surrounded by Turkeys. I was out last weekend to Kempville, to take the Turkey course, then to Carp for the gun show. I saw 7 on Saturday alone. Even in the western part of the city they can be seen all over the place. I saw one today at the side of the 416 about 20k south of Ottawa. Now, come season opener, they'll likely flee..

I sighted in my full choke Wingmaster 870 today with both Remington and Winchester 2 3/4 inch, 1 1/2 oz, No. 4 Turkey loads. Holy c##p..

1. At 20 m the pattern is OK, at 25 Its dropping and going left ( at least 5 pellets to the head). 30 m is the max I can shoot with that load, with that gun. I have to noticeably compensate up and right ! I was off more with the Winchester ammo so I'm going with the Remington "Premier Magnum,"#4 shot, 1 1/2 oz loads; and

2. I now feel like I also went a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson ! At the top of this thread one guy said they kill at both ends ! He's not kidding ! I fired around 10 of these little monsters today and let me tell you, they kick like a frigging mule.

That being said, I'm glad I did it. Otherwise I'd have probably missed anything past 20m. Anyone else in the same boat, or have any advice ? I'm headed out on the 7th of May, south of Ottawa.

I picked up a handmade walnut slate and walnut boxcall last weekend from Mountain Hollow Game Calls at the Massena, New York Sportsman Show. I am ready!

Pattern the 1300 today, scouted my "Mainland" property, Blinds are going out next week. I have found that if the blind is in the field for a few days even if I move it the birds ignore it. The property owner has been having Coyote problems so may pack a rifle as well as the shotgun.

Last season this property held 8 gobblers, going to shoot the first legal bird I see then spend the rest of the season chasing a "Big Boy".

That sums up my approach this year, too.

I was out scouting and fixing up a couple of my ground blinds on Saturday. Lots of footprints, but no birds in sight. I suspect that because I had my 3 boys along (all under 7 years old) that the birds didn't stick around for long. We had fun just the same!

I know every gun is made different but I have a mossberg 535 it comes with a XX .670 full turkey choke but I heard the HS undertaker is a good choke. Also what is everyone using for loads? I was looking at Winchester Supreme 3.5" #5's...bear with me this is my first year turkey hunting.
