I just purchased a Marlin 1895 GBL in 45-70 and was wondering if anyone has loaded Hornady's 500 gr DGS or DGX? What about their 480 gr DGS or DGX?

i do not think they can used in a marlin lever action as they will be to long when loaded.you can only go to 2.5 inch length with the marlin.okay for 45 70 single shots.they were designed for the 458 win mag bolt actions mostly.plus some people will say being round tipped makes them dangerous in a lever action as they are tube fed.you could start a chain reaction if one sets off a primer in the cartridge in front of you.if you need more info about marling a great website is marlin owners.com.huge website and they have different forums for different calibers.check it out tons of info.when you reload the 45 70 most people tend to use flat tip bullets.

If you are just looking to spend alot of money reloading your 45/70, you are on the right track, someone will undoubtedly recommend some TSX or Leverevolution bullets, they may be more expensive then the bullets you mention.
The 45/70 can be a very effective, and(Bullet makers won't like this) inexpensive round to load and shoot, using common available bullets, it is very effective for most any big game with heavy cast bullets with flat points at speeds of over 2000fps.
Jacketed loads can be used for deer and smaller game/ plinking.

45/70 heavy loads

Hey there,
My name is Travis and i live in cranbrook, BC. Just wanted to give you my two cents on loading heavy bullets in your marlin. I recently purchased an 1895 gbl like your own and had the same idea about the 500 gr bullets. i found a couple different makes of round nose bullets and seated them as far out as possible without getting any feeding or extracting problems and keeping the ogive of the bullet about 0.010" off the lands. In doing so, i found that there was enough space for a reasonable amount of H4198 (in my case, i used 32gr). My idea was that i would only load one in the chamber and one in the mag tube for the reason that they're round nose bullets. But i found a better solution. A canadian bullet casting company called the "Bullet Barn" produces a 450gn flat point bullet with a shape that suits the marlin perfectly! I was able to seat the bullet out quite a bit farther because of the shape. The ogive is farther from the end of the bullet which lets the bullet sit deeper into the barrel. My cartrige overall length is at 2.580" and that's with the bullet 0.010" off the lands. This allows easily 37gr of H4198 which gives decent velocity (not exactly sure yet....estimating 1500-1600fps), excellent accuracy and room to spare if you wish to load even hotter. The bullets run $69.00 for 200, which is extremely reasonable. Give them a try and I'm interested to know what you think.

If you want a 500 gr. hard cast check with Ben Hunchak he makes them and they should feed in a Marlin....Ive got some coming. :)

I have used a Marlin 45-70 for bear control in oat fields and bee hives, in the Peace country for years. The inexpensive 350 grain Hornady round nose is IMPOSSIBLE to beat for knocking over bear, moose, deer or Peterbuilts. Not fancy, and not expensice but there are a few hundred less bears in the Peace county because of them. I tried MANY others, (some of the cast were equal but I don't cast and buying them they were the same price as the Hornady's). If any of the many bullets I tried had worked better I would have used it.

Same price as cast??....care to share the source of these cheap Hornady's with the rest of us??

Bullet Barn, 45-70 cast bullets range from $27 to $36/100. Last batch of 2000 Hornady I bought was from P&D in Edmonton and they were $42/100, though that was a couple or so years ago.
