I've recently come into a NIB Ruger M77 laminate stock/stainless MKII in 7mm Rem Mag. These seem to be a "better" rifle than a Hawkeye....what's the real difference other than the flat finish on the Hawkeye?

Other than the new trigger, finishes and stock design not much changed AFAIK...

Main difference for me? I much prefer the ergos on the Hawkeyes stocks.

I have all 3 generations (plus a .308 with the paddle stock) and I like the Hawkeyes slimmer wrist and foreend. Plus the new trigger is pretty good, not quite like the "log-pull" I've felt on a couple of 1st and 2nd generation Rugers.

my hawkeye feels great in 35w.
nice an fairly light.. lighter than my rem 700 sps 270...

I've owned and rebarreled/restocked plenty of 700's.....picked up a lefty Ruger MK-II in 30-06 for my son 4 years ago, rebarreled it to 35 Whelen.
I like the action, all steel, controlled feed, real bottom metal(unlike the 700), good safety(unlike the 700) and contrary to popular belief the triggers are not that bad, I reworked the one on my son's rifle to a bit under 3#'s without creep. The trigger on this 7 Mag out of the box feels like no more than 3-1/2#'s and I can't feel any creep. And, you won't pull the bolt handle off the Ruger.

The 7 Mag with the laminate stocks weighs 7-1/2#'s bare...exactly the same as my Pre'64 Model 70 308 Norma in a McMillan stock.

now I'll get my Nomex suit on and wait for the 700 lovers to show up:D

Nothing against Remmy, i own a couples but on the craftmanship and finition Ruger model 77 are very nice. My 77 44 is impressive for a 700.00 gun OTD with rings and one extra mag, it is my first Ruger but it won't be my last for sure... JP.

Well said, when you sit a Ruger beside a Remington, or a CRF Winchester beside a Model 700, you really start to scratch you're head at how on earth Remington convinces people to pay the same for their 700 as the Ruger or Winchester.

Ruger gets a silly bad rap I still haven't found a basis for, good, solid well designed products.
