My first NON BLACK shotgun!!! :)

If you can post a pic we can tell. The rem chokes came out in 1987. In 1985 remington started playing with the screw in choke systems and some 85/86 12ga guns actually came with an impossible to find square thread thin wall Briley but marked as remington. My ducks unlimited 1100 1985 has those in it . This is what is on ther side of the special IC choke

There is also the possibility the 3" mag gun had a thicker barrel or the gun smiths I spoke to were not correct.. or the word "older" has to be nailed down better, I am talking 60's and 70's barrels for guns as the OP posted a pic of with the old wood checkering, they did change the barrel designs in the 80's. Any idea what year your gun is??
Perhaps one of the site gunsmiths will chime in to set us straight

The gun was made May of 1986 so that's probably why it was able to have the chokes installed that it has.

I got an older 870 wingmaster special field from my brother a couple of years ago. It has the 3" magnum receiver. Anyhow, he had it threaded for chokes a number of years ago. Now I can't say for certain what they are but I am holding 2 containers right now that say Remington, First in The Field on the lid and on the side it says Remington Arms Co. Inc. Ilion, N.Y. On the chokes it says Remington and the size designation. I assumed they were Rem chokes.

Several years ago Remington marketed the 870 and the 1100 in very short versions with modified choke. The guns did not sell very well and as a result remington marketed the same models with tubes. They were not rem chokes and the word was they were contracted to another company for the choke work. I have seen a few of these. Barrel choke marked mod. and the tube containers are marked remington and the chokes are marked with a dot system as . .. ... but they are not rem choke. I have never seen an after market rem choke installed.

There are lots of really s**tty choke jobs out there. What there is not a lot of is IC barrels. I would grab it.

So if the chokes that were installed on my 870 were not Rem chokes, would they screw into a newer Remington that has Rem chokes? I ask because I have an 1187 that is 3 years old. The chokes from the 870 will screw into it. Also, the choke that came with the 1187 is written modified on the side and has the corresponding dots.. That is the way the chokes for my 870 are as well, they are written with the designated size and corresponding dots.

I do not know. Some may and some may not. The chokes that I mention in my post were not compatable with rem. chokes.

That is a beutiful wingmaster. I bought one just like it when I was 15 and still own it. If you are concerned about the barrel etc, I have a 26" 2 3/4" chamber I/C wingmaster barrel (plain-no rib) collecting dust in my gun room. $50 and it is yours.

Still got that barrel?

Those are both rem chokes. I think it was the year of your barrel 1986.That was the year for sure rem was playing with the rem choke style and redesigning barrels. The light contour came out for example that year.I don't think they factory fitted any rem chokes for resale until 1987 but could have a bit earlier. I know I bought one of the 1st 1187 made and shipped to canada back then and it had rem chokes. The gun also would not cycle but that is another story.

Hi Covey:
I remember the mod offering you talk about but have never seen another factory choke tube in a rem other than the rem choke and the square thread thin wall Brileys in 85/86.Briley refered to them as the s-25 series and are now special order at 85.00 a pop.Ouch
Now they did install pro bore tubes on competition guns is that perhaps what you seen. First sporting clays versions had those I think.
