If you can post a pic we can tell. The rem chokes came out in 1987. In 1985 remington started playing with the screw in choke systems and some 85/86 12ga guns actually came with an impossible to find square thread thin wall Briley but marked as remington. My ducks unlimited 1100 1985 has those in it . This is what is on ther side of the special IC choke

There is also the possibility the 3" mag gun had a thicker barrel or the gun smiths I spoke to were not correct.. or the word "older" has to be nailed down better, I am talking 60's and 70's barrels for guns as the OP posted a pic of with the old wood checkering, they did change the barrel designs in the 80's. Any idea what year your gun is??
Perhaps one of the site gunsmiths will chime in to set us straight
The gun was made May of 1986 so that's probably why it was able to have the chokes installed that it has.
